If you’re going on holiday from the UK this year you’ll need to arrange private COVID tests to take before you travel and on your return. As of 4 October, there is a rule change. Get up to speed on what’s happening before you start booking. It’s wise to choose your tests from a government-listed private provider. In this review, we take a look at one of those providers, Medicspot, to see if its COVID tests could be worth your investment.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
What is Medicspot?
Medicspot is a UK healthcare provider and tech platform that links patients with private doctor appointments through pharmacies. Like many healthcare companies, Medicspot has adapted its offering during the pandemic and now offers all types of private COVID tests for those wishing to travel abroad from the UK.
Medicspot’s COVID PCR testing is in the process of being certified by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). The company is also on the government’s list of private COVID test providers, which means it meets the minimum required standards for safety and performance.
What types of COVID tests can I get from Medicspot?
Medicspot offers all types of PCR and rapid antigen tests for travel to and from low-risk countries. This includes fit to fly tests, day 2 and day 8 tests, and Test to Release kits to end your quarantine period early.
You can either order your PCR tests and collect them the same day from one of over 100 test hubs, or the tests can be delivered to your home address. Once the tests are complete, you drop them off by 2pm to your nearest hub and have your results by 11.59pm the next day.
What is Medicspot’s refunds policy?
You can change your mind within 14 days of the booking and you will be entitled to a refund. Medicspot will refund the price paid using the original payment method, but may deduct any costs incurred as a result.
Medicspot customer reviews
Medicspot rates highly on Trustpilot with an average of 4.1 out of 5 stars. The majority of customers rave about Medicspot’s quick and efficient service, the ease of doing the tests and the excellent customer service.
Those who left poor reviews did so because they either didn’t receive their tests on time, had trouble with the online registration form or their results were late, meaning they had to rearrange or cancel their travel plans (last updated: October 2021).
Are Medicspot tests accurate?
Like most government-approved COVID test suppliers, Medicspot tests are pretty accurate. But, remember, no COVID test is 100% reliable, even those which meet the regulatory standards for safety and performance.
How long does it take to get results from Medicspot?
Medicspot guarantees same-day antigen and next day PCR results or you get your money back. This means as long as you drop your PCR test to a Medicspot COVID Test Hub by 2pm on the day of the test, you should receive your results by 11.59pm the next day.
How much do Medicspot tests cost?
PCR fit to fly tests start from £75, while rapid antigen tests to return to England cost £29. If travelling back from a green list country, a day 2 test will set you back £75.
If you want to cut the duration of your quarantine, a Test to Release test starts at £75.
Pros and cons of Medicspot
- Government-listed COVID test provider.
- Over 100 COVID test hubs across England and Wales.
- 4 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot.
- Doctor-signed certificate included on PCR tests.
- More expensive than other private COVID test providers.
- Some customers complain about delayed test results.
Our verdict: Is Medicspot any good?
Yes, we reckon Medicspot is pretty good. What we especially like is the search functionality at the top of the website that tells you exactly what tests you need depending on your country of travel and how long you’re away for.
The website is also easy to navigate and the high customer satisfaction rating on Trustpilot provides peace of mind for anxious travellers.
The main downside is the cost of the tests, which are quite steep compared to other private COVID test providers. But then again, you get what you pay for, and if you can afford to spend a bit more for a better service then it’s probably worth the investment.
