Vaccinated travellers will be able to use cheaper lateral flow tests for day 2 checks from 24 October in England, the government announced.Read more…
If you’re planning a trip abroad, you’ll need to arrange COVID-19 tests for when you leave and when you return to the UK. As of 4 October, there’s a new rule change in place, so find out more about tests you’ll need before booking anything if you’re returning to England after that date.
We’ve reviewed the private test provider Kurix Health, which is part of Dante Labs, to see if its tests and service are any good. Dante Labs is currently being investigated by the UK competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, over concerns about its treatment of customers. Dante Labs has said it is disappointed by the decision and is co-operating fully. It also said it had invested significantly in its customer service “in the face of huge demand”.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
What is Kurix Health?
Kurix Health is a global biotechnology startup that’s part of the US-based healthcare company Dante Labs. Both companies sell private COVID-19 tests for travel from and to the UK. Both Dante Labs and Kurix Health are on the UK government’s list of private providers for day 2, day 5 and day 8 tests, meaning the tests meet the official minimum standards for safety and performance for their type.
What types of COVID-19 travel tests can I get from Kurix Health?
You can get individual tests as well as packages from Kurix Health, but all are PCR tests rather than lateral flow. The range includes pre-departure PCR tests (“fit to fly”) when leaving the UK, as well as tests for day 2 and 8, and day 5 Test to Release tests which can mean finishing quarantine early (only in England).
All the tests from Kurix Health are for doing at home, by you. You then send the test off to the lab via a Royal Mail tracked service.
What is Kurix Health’s refund policy?
It can process a refund up to 14 days after purchase if the sample has not yet been received by its lab. Refunds will appear on the card used to purchase the test.
Kurix Health customer reviews
On the reviews platform Trustpilot, Kurix Health scores 1.5 out of 5 overall, based on around 100 reviews. Most reviews give it a “bad” rating (last updated, October 2021). There were also some complaints on Twitter, with a similar theme of delays in getting results and poor communication, although not all posts were negative. We’ve also received some negative reviews from users of the service, and these are published below, on this page.
Are Kurix Health tests accurate?
We couldn’t find information on the Kurix Health website giving the details of test accuracy, but the company is on the UK government list of providers that meet the “applicable minimum standards” for tests for day 2, 5 and 8. All companies on the list have to be going through the 3-stage accreditation process by the government-appointed body UKAS.
It’s worth remembering that no COVID-19 test is 100% accurate, though.
How long does it take to get results from Kurix Health?
The company says that to get your sample to the lab for the next business day, you need to use a Royal Mail priority box before 9am. Within a day of the lab getting your sample, it says it will analyse it and give you your results online.
How much do Kurix Health’s tests cost?
On the pre-departure (from the UK) front, Kurix just does PCR tests – coming in at £48. So if the country you’re heading to only requires an antigen (lateral flow) test, then you may be able to save yourself some money by opting for one of those.
Kurix Health’s PCR tests for day 2, 5 or 8 purposes cost £39, or £68 for a day 2 and 8 bundle. These are among the cheapest we’ve seen.
Pros and cons of Kurix Health
- Government-listed COVID-19 test provider
- Cheaper than some other COVID-19 test providers
- Easy to order tests online
- Poor Trustpilot reviews, and some negative comments on Twitter
- No guarantee of when you’ll receive test results
- No proof of test accuracy found on website
Our verdict: Is Kurix Health any good?
Kurix Health is certainly cheaper than many other private test providers, which will no doubt appeal to many. But these are tests you have to do at home and post to the lab, with no guarantee of when you’ll get your results. If you’re in a hurry, based on the feedback we’ve seen, it may be wise to look at more pricey alternatives, including those at a clinic. It is owned by Dante Labs, which is under investigation by the competition watchdog over concerns about the treatment of customers.
