Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can go unnoticed for a long time in both women and men.

It’s straightforward to test for chlamydia with a swab or a urine test. You can arrange this through your GP or a sexual health clinic. It’s important to get any symptoms checked by your GP or health clinic as soon as possible. You can also get fast, discreet and affordable tests from a large number of private online retailers, which can provide peace of mind. It takes about 2 weeks from contracting chlamydia to being able to reliably test for it and testing before 2 weeks could produce a false negative result, but you may wish to take a test immediately and then test again at the 2-week mark.

Online retailers sell tests for chlamydia in isolation or tests for groups of STIs including chlamydia. As you might expect, tests for a wide selection of STIs typically cost more than tests for individual, specific STIs, but if you are concerned you might have been exposed to other infections, or if you’d just like the peace of mind, then you may prefer to opt for a test covering several infections.

Frequently asked questions about chlamydia home test kits

How do private at-home chlamydia tests work?

  1. Compare test providers to choose the kit that's right for you.
  2. Buy your kit online.
  3. Receive your test kit in the post.
  4. Take the sample in the comfort of your home (instructions will be provided with your kit and most retailers also have videos on their sites).
  5. Post your sample off to the lab (postage is generally included in the purchase of the kit – you'll typically get a prepaid envelope to use).
  6. Receive your results by email or in an app, along with guidance on what to do next.

For women, the test will generally require a vaginal swab (which is believed to be more accurate than a urine sample), and for men the test will generally require a urine sample.

If you're worried that you might have an STI, you should hold off any sexual activity until you've tested yourself and receved a negative result.

Can I get a free chlamydia test to do at home?

If you're aged under 25 and live in certain areas in England, you can get a free chlamydia home test as part of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme (NCSP). You can search for your area on the NHS site to check if it's covered. There are also sexual health organisations that provide tests by post for free.

Can I get a free chlamydia test if I'm over 25?

You can get a free and confidential test at a sexual health or contraceptive clinic and your GP surgery. In England, if you're over 25, you're not covered by the government's free online testing programme. But there are sexual health organisations that may be willing to send you a test by post for free.

What happens after my home chlamydia test?

Once the test provider's lab has received your sample, you'll typically get your results in 1-5 days. You'll receive an email and if the test provider works via an app, you'll typically be notified in that, too.

If it's a positive result and you do have chlamydia, it's usually treated using antibiotics. You should refrain from sexual activity until you've completed your treatment.

Test providers won’t tell your GP the outcome of the test unless you give them your consent to. If you are happy for your GP to be informed, some test providers will do this at your instruction, or will give you a letter you can send to your GP. Alternatively you can let your GP know directly yourself. Either way, if you have chlamydia, it’s important to get in touch with a GP or clinic to get treated as soon as possible.
