Gucci has announced its plan to become fur free!
Yas Gucci! The Big Brand reveals its stance to eliminate fur from its line and stand against animal cruelty.
Those who are animal lovers are often faced with the conundrum of whether or not to buy high-end fashion when real fur is used. But for those who share a love for furry critters, Gucci just announced it is going fur-free! YES!
The decision comes after both Armani took a stance against fur back in 2016 and NET-A-PORTER went fur-free in June.
They definitely mean business. Gucci is subscribing the meaning of “animal fur” to “any animal skin, or part thereof, with hair or fur fibers attached thereto, either in its raw or processed state or the pelt of any animal killed for the animal’s fur”. This now means that mink, fox, rabbit, karakul lamb and raccoon dog are completely off limits. The CEO of Gucci, Marco Bizarri, made the announcement at the 2017 Kering Talk at The London College of Fashion, stating he believed using fur was no longer “modern” and there are multiple alternatives to using fur.
Not long after, the Humane Society made a press release detailing its new anti-fur alliance with the fashion brand. The big change will take place in autumn 2018 with Gucci ceasing production of any fur garments or products. The luxury brand also wishes to continue working with the Humane Society in “identifying and reducing its impact on animals and the environment.” For those who were a fan of the Gucci fur loafers, the luxe Italian brand will be producing products accompanied by faux fur, wool and new fabric innovations. So you don’t have to say goodbye completely.
Bizarri also commended investing in startup businesses that are looking at new technologies to make the fashion industry more sustainable. These new technologies look at creating the “same quality of leather production, for instance, without any water or chemical waste” and a more positive effect on animals and the environment. Approximately “100 million animals a year still suffer for the fur industry”, and Gucci’s stance will assist in ensuring a future that is fur-free, according to the Humane Society.
This way our furry friends can focus on doing what they do best… being absolutely adorable, of course.
