What is a “fit to fly” test?

A “fit to fly” test is a COVID-19 test that many countries around the world are requiring travellers to take before they leave England to travel abroad. When the results of your “fit to fly” test come back negative for COVID-19 you will receive a “fit to fly” certificate which you must present at the airport before your flight.

The rules are set to change on 4 October, so be sure to get up to speed on what’s needed for traveling back to the UK.

How much do “fit to fly” tests cost?

You can compare test prices in the table above. As these tests are provided by private companies the prices can vary, but the average price for a “fit to fly” test is around £75.

Should a “fit to fly” test be a PCR or an antigen (lateral flow) test?

The type of test necessary for you to travel depends on which country you are going to.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is the most accurate test for the virus and requires your swab be sent to a laboratory for analysis. Depending on your destination, you may need to do your PCR test at a clinic or you may be able to do it yourself at home and then get it to a clinic/lab.

Antigen tests (also known as lateral flow tests) are rapid tests you can do at home if you have no symptoms of COVID. This involves doing a swab of your tonsils and nose and works similarly to a pregnancy test. Within 30 minutes you’ll see if you have tested positive or negative for the virus. In order to get a certificate of a negative test result from the test provider, you’ll generally need to supply video or photographic proof to demonstrate that it was you who took the test, that you did it properly, and that you did it within the right time frame.

Lateral flow tests are quicker and cheaper than PCR tests and are accepted as proof of a negative test result by some countries.

NHS tests can’t be used for international travel.
