Opening a joint account can enable you and a friend or partner to easily pay household bills or cover the cost of joint holidays. But what does digital provider Monzo have to offer?
Our verdict: Is a joint account with Monzo worth it?
If you and your housemate or partner already hold a personal Monzo bank account, opening a joint account with the bank could make a lot of sense if you want to manage your joint finances more easily. The fact that you can earn interest on your joint savings pot makes it even more attractive.
However, you’ll need to be happy managing your money via the app only, and keep in mind that this is a relatively basic bank account, so if you’re looking for an account with more in the way of features and perks, including an overdraft, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
Pros and cons of a joint Monzo account
Pros
- Enables you to pay for shared bills and split payments with ease
- You can also set up a joint savings pot within your account
- Benefit from fee-free spending abroad
- Accounts have FSCS protection
Cons
- Certain perks only apply to your joint account if both account holders have a paid plan
- Limited features compared to some of its competitors
- No overdraft available
- Can only manage your account via the app
"Monzo has a new feature where each month, 10 lucky customers get double their salary (capped at a maximum of £10,000). For example, if your take-home pay is £2,000, Monzo will add an extra £2,000 to your account. Sounds amazing, right? Let’s see. This kind of perk is designed to encourage you to use Monzo as your main bank account. To qualify, you’ll need to move your salary to Monzo, either by informing your employer or by using the Current Account Switch Service. But is it worth switching for? At the time of writing, Monzo has around 12.5 million current account customers in the UK, which means your odds of having your salary doubled are roughly 1 in 1.25 million. In other words, it shouldn’t be the deciding factor. It’s a fun bonus if you happen to be one of the lucky 10, but not a reason to switch on its own."
Does Monzo offer a joint account?
Yes. The account comes with a pearlescent white debit card for each account holder for shared spending, and you will also benefit from fee-free spending abroad.
What’s more, as Monzo is a fully licensed UK bank, your joint funds will be protected up to £120,000 per person under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
Which accounts are joint?
The Monzo joint account is separate from the individual Monzo accounts. To qualify, both people must already have a Monzo personal account.
You can have the free version or a paid plan offering extra features, but some of those premium perks only apply to the joint account if both account holders have a paid Monzo plan.
Within your joint account, you can also open an instant access savings pot and earn interest on your shared balance.
How do I get a joint account with Monzo?
To open a joint account with Monzo, you will both need to have your own personal account with the bank. Once your account is up and running, follow the steps below:
- Go into the app and tap the Home icon in the menu bar
- Tap the ‘plus’ icon in the top right of the screen
- Tap Apply for a Joint Account
If you have the co-owner’s details saved in your contacts and you have Payments with Friends switched on in your app settings, you can select the co-owner from the list. Otherwise you can tap on ‘invite someone’ and this generates a link you can send to the other person. This link expires after 24 hours.
Once the other person has clicked on the link, your account should be ready to go. Note that your joint account is the only shared account – your personal account will remain private and not visible to the other joint account owner.
