Our verdict

checkmyfile claims to offer the UK's most detailed credit report, drawing on data from not one, but four major credit rating agencies.

checkmyfile is a great option for anyone looking to get a comprehensive credit report and the only one to use data from all of the major credit rating agencies. While the monthly subscription fee is definitely on the higher end, it represents good value for money for those looking to get as much information on their credit history as possible.

Pros

  • Combines data from multiple rating agencies
  • Free 30-day trial
  • Extremely detailed

Cons

  • High monthly fee
  • No automated identity fraud warnings

What is checkmyfile?

checkmyfile is an online-based credit score and report provider that was the first to give UK consumers access to their credit report online. Originally founded in Cornwall in 2000, in 2010 it became the only credit report provider to include data from multiple credit rating agencies.

How does a checkmyfile credit report work?

When you apply for a loan or credit card, the lender will check your credit score and credit report to determine whether they should accept your application, as well as how much they’ll let you borrow and the interest rate you’ll be charged.

Unlike other credit report providers, checkmyfile gives you a credit report based on up to six years of your credit history, and determines your credit score based on data from four of the major credit rating agencies:

  • Experian
  • Equifax
  • Transunion
  • Crediva

All you need to know about credit scores and reports

How do I get a checkmyfile credit report?

In order to get your checkmyfile credit report you’ll need to provide personal information including:

  • Your name and date of birth
  • Your contact details
  • Your address
  • Your card details

Once you’ve submitted your personal information, you’ll then receive a copy of your credit report.

Is checkmyfile any good?

checkmyfile is the only UK credit report provider to offer data from all the major credit rating agencies in the same report, which may be handy for consumers looking to get a detailed overview of their credit history.

However, unlike some competitors, it doesn’t provide automatic identity fraud notifications or update you when your credit score changes.

And crucially, you can get the same information for free, either by going direct to the credit reference agencies themselves (and asking for statutory copies of your credit file) or by going to similar-but-free services (you may need to register with more than one to gain visibility of all three agencies’ reports).

How much does checkmyfile cost?

checkmyfile currently offers a 30-day free trial of its multi-agency credit report, which means you can get free access to your Equifax, Experian, TransUnion and Crediva credit reports for a limited time.

Once your free trial expires you’ll need to pay £14.99 per month for your checkmyfile credit report.

Does using checkmyfile affect my credit score?

No, checking or requesting your credit report from checkmyfile will not have any impact on your credit score regardless of how often you check it.

How do I cancel my checkmyfile monthly subscription?

You can stop your checkmyfile credit report subscription at any time by email or phone, or by logging in to your account and then sending a message to the checkmyfile customer support. You’ll then receive a cancellation reference code to confirm you have stopped your subscription.

How do I improve my credit score?

If your credit report or credit score is lower than you’d like it to be, there are a couple of things you can do to help improve it, including:

  • Paying your bills on time
  • Closing any unused credit accounts, such as old credit cards or bank accounts
  • Registering on the electoral roll and making sure your address is up to date
  • Regularly checking your credit report for any errors
