Maybe your head has been turned by a car insurance deal somewhere else? Or you want to get a higher level of coverage for your car?

Whatever the case, our guide not only gives you the basic steps for leaving. We also help you decide if quitting Elephant is worth it for you, as it could cost some people a pretty penny to jump ship. If you’re cancelling your Elephant car insurance then you could well be on the hunt for another deal, if so then you can check out some deals below too.

How to cancel your Elephant car insurance policy

Cancellation after 14 days
So the cooling off period has been and gone but you want out. Unfortunately it’s going to cost you as you’ll certainly get charged for leaving early.

    1. Contact. Call, email or write a letter to Elephant saying you want to cancel your insurance. Specify whether you wish to leave immediately or at a later date.
    2. Pay monthly customers. If there’s any outstanding premium on your account you have 10 days to pay it off.
    3. Refund. Elephant will then give customers who paid in full at the beginning of the year a refund for the coverage time they haven’t used.
    4. Made a claim. Should you have made a claim (or had one made against you) then you won’t get a single penny back. Those who pay monthly have to cough up the full premium cost should they try cancel too.
    5. Fees. You’ll be hit with an administration fee which is usually about £50, as well as an additional “cancellation charge”, which might be expensive if a black box needs to be uninstalled.
Cancellation within 14 days of cover
Maybe you jumped the gun by getting the Elephant policy and you’ve now discovered a better, cheaper deal elsewhere. Thankfully, if you’re still in the cooling off period you can get out easily and cheaply.

      1. Contact. Call Elephant within 14 days of getting the welcome letter or email.
      2. New policy. Elephant will cancel your contract that day so make sure you sign up with a new car insurance provider the same day.
      3. Refund. You’ll get your premium back, minus an administration charge. This could be more than £100 if you’ve had the LittleBox installed.

Things to consider before cancelling your policy with Elephant

  • Fees. You might have to pay an administration fee and a cancellation charge to cancel Elephant, which could be more than £100 in total. It’s wise to work out if the refund is more than these charges. You don’t want to be left out of pocket.
  • Have you made a claim. Elephant won’t give you any refund on your premium if you’ve made a claim or had a claim made against you. Plus, if you pay monthly and made a claim, you’ll have to cough up the full premium for the year. It might just be worth sticking with Elephant until renewal if so.
  • Change existing policy. You don’t have to cancel if you’re looking for a cheaper policy or a different level of cover. Maybe you want to downgrade to third party? Get in touch with Elephant and see how much it will cost to adjust your insurance instead of leaving.
  • Best time to switch. Three weeks before your Elephant policy is due to run out is generally the best time to look around for new car insurance. Insurers tend to drive up prices for people who look at the last minute. If you’re in the final few days with Elephant it might be cheaper to just renew your existing deal.
  • No claims bonus. Elephant might refuse to allow you to take your no claims bonus if you leave early, which might hit you where it hurts (your wallet) when you’re getting a new car insurance policy.

Changing car insurance provider

Instead of simply just cancelling your Elephant insurance, you might be looking to nab yourself a new car insurance policy. You’ll certainly need it if you’re planning on keeping your car or driving again. Here’s what you have to do.

      1. Shop around. Work out what level of cover you want then use comparison sites to really compare and contrast all the deals out there.
      2. Go direct. You won’t find every insurance company’s deals on comparison sites, so it’s a good idea to get a few quotes directly too.
      3. Cancel and sign up immediately. You don’t want two insurance policies at the same time so you want to cancel your Elephant policy early and sign up for your new policy the same day.
      4. Delay your new policy. Or you want to ask your new provider to delay your car insurance cover for when your Elephant deal runs out. Make sure you call Elephant so it doesn’t auto-renew your existing insurance if you are going down this route.
      5. Pay fees. If you’ve chosen to cancel your Elephant policy early then you’ll get a refund (as long as you haven’t had a claimable incident). However it will charge you an administration fee and cancellation charge.
