Frequently asked questions
If you’re looking for a thermometer to measure body temperature, keep your eyes peeled for an oral/rectal/axillary thermometer, which can be used by all the family, including babies.
This will depend on the type of thermometer you’re using, but most models are similar. Carefully place the tip of the thermometer under the tongue and with your mouth closed leave it in place for one minute. Remove the thermometer and read the temperature.
A normal body temperature is generally accepted at 37°C. Although some studies have shown it can range from 36.1°C to 37.2°C. A temperature over 38°C most often means you have a fever caused by an infection or illness.
A quick, easy way to sterilise a thermometer is to wipe it down with alcohol. The best way to do this is to use alcohol wipes or soak a soft, disposable pad or cotton ball and use it to clean the device. When finished, rinse the tip of the thermometer in cool water before use.
Regular digital thermometers use electronic heat sensors to record body temperature. These oral readings are usually accurate — as long as the mouth is closed while the thermometer is in place. An easy test is to insert the thermometer stem an inch deep in ice water without touching the glass. Wait for a minute and take your reading. If the thermometer is accurate it will register 32°F or 0°C.
