We asked Liz about the changes happening in buy now, pay later services
Long-awaited government plans to regulate buy now, pay later (BNPL) services finally appeared in 2023. This is good news for the many consumers using BNPL who haven’t realised that it's a form of credit, or that if they miss a payment, there are consequences which can, with some services, ultimately include debt collection. When we investigated the sector, we encountered a confusing lottery - some services said that the user’s credit score could be affected, others said it wouldn’t be, some sites contradicted themselves. Getting basic information was hard work. One provider refused to tell us its last resort for missed payments. It’s no wonder consumers are confused. It’s definitely time to give everyone the right information upfront so they know what they’re getting into.
