AI stock picking: ChatGPT vs Bard

We pitted two popular AI chatbots against one another in a stock-picking challenge.

AI fund tracker: How do ChatGPT and Bard stock picks compare?

Quick overview

  • We pitted two popular AI chatbots against one another in a stock-picking challenge to see which performs better.
  • As of 15th September 2023, the ChatGPT stock picks are comfortably ahead, up 14.62% from when it was created on 6 March 2023.
  • Meanwhile, the Google Bard stock picks are up 8.17% in the same period.

ChatGPT vs Bard: How are they different?

ChatGPT is probably the most famous AI chatbot developed by OpenAI. Bard is Google’s AI chatbot that has been rolled out recently. They are both examples of generative AI designed to answer questions and generate text from prompts.

The main difference between the two is that ChatGPT is a language learning model that currently only has training data up to September 2021, while Bard is connected to the internet, so it can access up-to-date information.

This should mean that Bard should provide more current and accurate responses than ChatGPT on topical questions, although people have reported error issues with both platforms.

Despite ChatGPT not being connected to the internet, it’s still winning the battle of AI stock picking against Bard!

What stocks did ChatGPT pick?

We asked ChatGPT to create a portfolio of stocks from high-quality businesses with criteria taken from the leading 10 funds it is competing against. These include things like low debt levels, sustained growth in the past and assets that generate an advantage over competitors.

Given these inputs, the programme suggested the 38 stocks in the table below. We assigned each stock equal weighting for the purpose of this experiment.

What stocks did Bard pick?

Bard also chose 38 stocks to create a portfolio based on similar criteria we gave ChatGPT. We didn’t specify where the stocks needed to come from, but it chose all US companies.

How did the AI chatbots pick stocks?

Both ChatGPT and Bard are clear that they can’t offer financial advice, but Bard was far more willing to choose stock picks for us than ChatGPT!

ChatGPT was resistant to the idea of providing us with financial advice and stated at first that it was not able to recommend specific stocks. However, after we asked it to answer the question theoretically, it provided us with 38 stock picks. Interestingly, it didn’t include a disclaimer that it was not working from up-to-date information.

While Bard gave us the stock picks straight away, we did find that it was making very basic errors. After requesting 38 stocks, it gave us 37 and included one company twice. When we asked for another, it then added a different company a second time.

Both funds feature a spread of industries, including sectors like tech, healthcare and consumer discretionary. However, Bard had stocks from 11 categories, while ChatGPT had stocks from 8 categories.

Can you use AI for investing advice?

This was a conceptual experiment to see which AI wins in hypothetical stock picking and to illustrate the future potential of AI for investing, but money was not put at risk at any point. People should not use AI in its current format to get stock tips. AI chatbots like these are still in the very early stages of development and should not be relied upon for significant life decisions.

Our 2023 survey found that 8% of people had used ChatGPT for financial advice, while 19% said they would consider asking ChatGPT for advice. The remaining people would not use ChatGPT for financial advice (35%) or didn’t know what ChatGPT was (38%).

Methodology

  • Analysts at finder.com asked ChatGPT and Bard to create a theoretical fund of over 30 stocks based on a range of criteria selected from popular funds.
  • Finder commissioned Censuswide between 24.04 and 26.04 to carry out a nationally representative survey of adults aged 18+. A total of 2,000 people were questioned throughout Great Britain, with representative quotas for gender, age and region.
