0044 COVID TEST review: Private COVID testing for travel
This site seems to have regularly changed its name to stay at the top of the government's list of private COVID test providers. But is it legit?
If you’re planning a trip abroad, you’ll need to look at the new set of travel rules as of 4 October, so you’re fully in the know about what tests are required for your return.
+44 COVID TEST, also called 0044 COVID TEST, is named in such a way that, on the gov.uk testing provider list, it falls close to the top of the list (at the time of writing). Does it deserve this status? We’ve set out the tests it provides, and put this COVID-19 travel test provider under the lens.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
What is 0044 COVID TEST?
0044 COVID TEST provides COVID tests for travel and is an offshoot of Rightangled, a company that provides a range of different private health tests. The company is currently on the UK government’s list of travel test providers, which means it meets the minimum safety standards required.
What types of COVID travel tests can I get from 0044 COVID TEST?
0044 COVID TEST sells all the tests you might need if returning from a low-risk country. It offers tests for day 2, day 8 and Test to Release (which is only in England). You can order all the tests online and carry them out at home. You can also get a “fit to fly” PCR test which you can also do at home.
If you live in the Chester area, where the company is based, you can book on-site self-swab day 2 and day 8 tests, which are much cheaper than ordering tests to do at home.
What is 0044 COVID TEST’s refund policy?
It has a strict no refund and returns policy for COVID PCR testing kits. Once you’ve had a booking reference number issued and sent to you, there is no option for a refund.
0044 COVID TEST customer reviews
On the reviews site Trustpilot, feedback about the company is generally negative – it scores 1.5 out of 5, based on around 96 reviews (last updated October 2021). Criticisms involve delays in receiving test results (one review cited a wait of over 2 months), trouble getting in touch with customer service, and order numbers being incompatible with passenger locator forms. We’ve seen similar criticisms of some other private COVID test providers.
Those who gave the company 5 stars praised it for its ease of service and speedy turnaround of test results. One reviewer mentioned taking a gamble due to 0044 COVID TEST’s low prices and having a positive experience. Feedback about parent company Rightangled is overall far more positive than the reviews for 0044 COVID TEST.
How accurate are 0044 COVID TEST tests?
We couldn’t find information on the company’s website about the efficacy of all its tests, but it does boast a 99.9% accuracy for the on-site unsupervised self-swab PCR tests.
But remember, no COVID test is 100% accurate, even those that meet standards for performance and safety.
How long does it take to get results from 0044 COVID TEST?
At-home COVID tests are sent back to the 0044 COVID TEST laboratory in a prepaid envelope and delivered by Royal Mail. Once your tests are received, the laboratory aims to have your results processed and back to you within 48 hours.
How much does a 0044 COVID TEST cost?
An individual PCR test (sent to your home via DPD in 1-3 working days) will cost £59. Meanwhile a day 2 and day 8 bundle costs £99.
If you live in the M25, you can pay around £80 extra for a courier to come out to you the same day, wait while you take your sample and then take it away with them (you can pay over £200 if you need to do this several times, for example, for day 2, 5 and 8 tests).
For the tests with free delivery, 0044 COVID TEST is competitive, but not the cheapest around.
Pros and cons of 0044 COVID TEST
- Government-listed COVID test provider.
- Option to do self-swab tests at Chester laboratory, saving you money.
- The regularly changing company name appears to be a bid to game the government’s list, which doesn’t inspire trust.
- Many negative customer reviews.
- Admin fee of £25 for all refunds.
Our verdict: Is 0044 COVID TEST any good?
If you live near Chester and can do the self-swab tests at the 0044 COVID TEST lab then we reckon you can be fairly confident that your results will be processed quickly and you’ll have no issues. At £20 per test it’s competitive.
But, as with many other private COVID test providers we’ve reviewed, you do seem to take a risk when doing tests at home and posting your samples back. Almost all 0044 COVID TEST’s negative reviews relate to delayed results or lost samples. So, if you need your results processed quickly it’s probably worth finding another provider that offers a more reliable service.
