Our verdict

Earn up to 4.26% APY, but watch out for excessive withdrawal fees.

The TAB Bank High Yield Savings account is a solid option if you’re looking for a high interest rate with a low barrier to entry. Earn up to 4.26%, over 10 times the national average savings rate, and you won’t need to worry about an opening deposit requirement.(1) But because TAB is tailored for truck drivers and workers in the transportation industry, the APY and $0 opening deposit are the only appeals for those outside the industry. Truck drivers get additional deposit options if they receive checks from certain trucking payroll companies and frequent Pilot Flying J truck stops.

Best for: Savers in the trucking industry looking for a competitive APY.

Pros

  • No opening deposit or monthly fee
  • High APY

What we like about TAB Bank high yield savings account

TAB Bank’s savings account has solid features like no monthly fee, daily compounded interest and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insurance for up to $250,000.

No opening deposit or monthly fees

You don’t need to meet any minimum opening deposit requirements to open a TAB Bank high-yield savings account, and you can start earning interest with as little as $0.01. You also won’t have to worry about paying a maintenance fee.

Competitive APY

With an interest rate of 4.26%, TAB offers one of the most competitive APYs in today’s market on any balance you keep in the account. TAB also doesn’t limit the amount of money you can keep in your savings account, nor will it cap the amount of interest you can earn.

Perks for truckers

TAB Bank has long-standing ties with the transportation industry. Truck drivers can benefit from unique funding options, such as deposits from Pilot Flying J gift cards and third-party checks from some trucking payroll companies.

Where it falls short

Although you can earn high interest with your TAB Bank savings account, beware of these downsides.

Limited customer service

TAB’s customer service is only available on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. MT or on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. And though you could also fill out a contact form to get help, it’s not as convenient as directly talking to someone on the phone.

Some fees to watch out for

TAB charges some extra fees, including $15 for cashier’s checks and $20 for excessive withdrawals. For reference, most banks charge up to $10 on cashier’s checks, and excessive withdrawal fees are usually around $5 per incident.

Also, if you decide to close your TAB Bank high-yield savings account, there’s a $10 account closure fee.

No physical locations

TAB doesn’t have any physical branch locations for you to visit. So, if you’re uncomfortable with digital banking, you may want to open a savings account elsewhere.

What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score crunches over 250 savings accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's interest rate, fees, opening deposit and features - this gives you a simple score out of 10.

To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of savings accounts against FDIC-reported national averages as a baseline. Accounts with rates well over the national average are scored the highest, while accounts with rates well below are scored low.

TAB Bank has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but it’s not actually BBB accredited. In terms of its customer ratings, the bank has a pretty low score on BBB based on a small batch of 12 reviews. Its Trustpilot profile isn’t much more flattering, with some of the negative reviews mentioning hidden fees, poor banking infrastructure and unauthorized charges. That said, many of the one- to two-star ratings were targeted at TAB Bank’s other products like loans and checking accounts.

Since TAB Bank’s formal reviews are limited, we also dug into reviews of the TAB Bank mobile app on the Google Play Store. The app has a solid rating 4.4 out of 5. Users say they like the simple design and ease of use. Still, we saw quite a few customer complaints about the app crashing after updates, having a cluttered UI and lacking basic security features like biometric login. Overall, though, most users seem satisfied with the app.
