What we like about TAB Bank high yield savings account

TAB Bank, or Transportation Alliance Bank, was originally founded by Flying J’s truck stops, and you could find locations inside its truck stops.

However, TAB Bank has moved away from this, and has moved away from physical locations at Flying J’s locations and is fully digital. However, it still offers trucker bank accounts and perks, and is an FDIC-insured bank on its own.

As it has moved away from exclusively designing its products for truckers, its high-yield savings account doesn’t require you to be on the road or frequently visiting Flying J’s.

No monthly fees or opening deposit required

TAB Bank’s savings account has solid features like no monthly fee, daily compounded interest and typical FDIC insurance for up to $250,000.

You don’t need to meet any minimum opening deposit requirements to open a TAB Bank high-yield savings account, and you can start earning interest with as little as $0.01.

Competitive APY

With an interest rate of 3.61%, TAB offers one of the most competitive APYs in today’s market on any balance you keep in the account.

TAB also doesn’t limit the amount of money you can keep in your savings account, nor will it cap the amount of interest you can earn.

Hot tip: No more excessive withdrawal fees

This account used to charge a $20 excessive withdrawal fee, and an account closure fee, but there is no mention of these fees in TAB Bank’s current fee schedule. Yay!

What could be better

Although you can earn high interest with your TAB Bank savings account, beware of these downsides.

Limited customer service

TAB’s customer service is only available on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. MT or on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. And though you could also fill out a contact form to get help, it’s not as convenient as directly talking to someone on the phone.

No physical locations

TAB doesn’t have any physical branch locations for you to visit. So, if you’re uncomfortable with digital banking, you may want to open a savings account elsewhere.

What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score crunches over 250 savings accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's interest rate, fees, opening deposit and features - this gives you a simple score out of 10.

To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of savings accounts against FDIC-reported national averages as a baseline. Accounts with rates well over the national average are scored the highest, while accounts with rates well below are scored low.

TAB Bank has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but it’s not actually BBB accredited. In terms of its customer ratings, the bank has a pretty low score on BBB based on a small batch of 11 reviews. Its Trustpilot profile isn’t much more flattering, with some of the negative reviews mentioning hidden fees, poor banking infrastructure and unauthorized charges. That said, many of the one- to two-star ratings were targeted at TAB Bank’s other products like loans and checking accounts.

Since TAB Bank’s formal reviews are limited, we also dug into reviews of the TAB Bank mobile app on the Google Play Store. The app has a solid rating 4.3 out of 5. Users say they like the simple design and ease of use. Still, we saw quite a few customer complaints about the app crashing after updates, having a cluttered UI and lacking basic security features like biometric login. Overall, though, most users seem satisfied with the app.
