As the largest automobile association in the US, AAA has offices and local agents dotted around each region. This streamlines its customer service and makes canceling a policy as easy as signing up for one.
Yes, AAA has a flexible cancellation policy. You can cancel your coverage at any time, and you’ll receive a prorated refund on your premiums. Keep in mind, though, that car insurance is a legal requirement in most states. If you’re planning to continue driving, you’ll want to have a new policy in place before your policy expires.
AAA doesn’t advertise a cancellation fee for car insurance, though some users have reported being charged a cancellation fee, depending on the region. If you’re canceling your AAA membership, a 10% fee applies to certain regions, unless you’re canceling during the free look period. The 10% fee is calculated on a prorated basis. You’ll be charged 10% of what you would owe for the remainder of your policy. Read the fine print of your policy or contact a local agent to find out if you’ll be subject to that fee.
No, you can cancel your car insurance and keep your membership if you’d like to keep your towing and membership benefits.
AAA makes managing your policy easy. It has a centralized customer service team for each region, so you can cancel your coverage by calling or sending a letter to your region’s headquarters. For in-person assistance, you can pop into your local agent’s office. With over 1,100 branches across the US and Canada, there’s bound to be one close to you.
If your calling or mailing in a cancellation, have this information handy:
To cancel your coverage over the phone, call the insurance department in your region or a local office. Since AAA’s policies vary between regions, save time by going to AAA’s website and clicking Find a Location on the upper right-hand corner of the homepage. Enter your ZIP code to find a branch close to you.
You can also call the general AAA auto insurance line at 877-387-8378, but you may be on the phone a little longer. It’s an automated system, so follow the prompts.
Before you dial, have your policy number handy. You can find this on your policy documents.
You can also mail a written notice to your region’s headquarters, finding the address on your its site. In your letter, include the info you’ll need to cancel your policy, plus a dated signature.
AAA has local agents across the US, so you can pop into your local branch to cancel your policy in person. To find out where it is, look at your policy documents or go to the AAA website and click Find a Location. Type in your ZIP code and a list of contact details will appear.
The quickest and most seamless way to cancel your coverage is over the phone. You can call your region’s headquarters or your local agent. You’ll likely have to listen to a last-ditch sales spiel, but if you’re dead set on canceling, the whole process takes a matter of minutes. If you’d rather speak to someone face-to-face, drop in to your local branch.
You’ll receive a final notice in the mail and email, along with a prorated refund of your premium from the date of your cancellation to the end of your term. If you haven’t received a confirmation within three weeks, follow up with AAA.

Your information is secure.
It’s best to cancel or switch your car insurance policy three to four weeks before it’s up for renewal. This gives you time to explore your options, settle on a new provider and qualify for any early shopper discounts. Plus, you can use the details about your coverage, discounts and premiums in your renewal notice to compare coverage.
As with all kinds of insurance, reassess your coverage if your circumstances have changed. For example, if you’ve gotten married or bought a house, you may be able to bundle your policies for a discount with a new provider. If your credit has improved or you’ve changed cars, you may be able to score a better rate. And if you’re moving states, it’s worth comparing the best car insurance providers available in your new state to ensure you’re getting the most out of your coverage. Auto insurance requirements vary state by state, so you may need to make some adjustments.
Your car insurance coverage should suit your situation. If yours no longer does or you’re not satisfied with your carrier’s pricing, customer service or claims process, you may want to cancel outright. With AAA, you’ll get a prorated refund on your remaining premiums, so you won’t be bogged down with a huge financial loss.
There are some perks to staying with your provider, too. You may be eligible for loyalty or renewal discounts. To find out if that’s the case, call customer service or your local agent, who will assess your coverage and current situation.
Sure, your car insurance policy is a contract, but you’re entitled to break it at any time. AAA makes the transition as smooth as possible, allowing customers to cancel online, over the phone or in person and receive a prorated refund on their premiums.

Hello Bryant,
Thank you for your comment.
If you want to cancel your AAA membership, Please call the AAA Member Service Center, then please select the “member services” option when you reach the automated call center. Select the “membership questions” option when prompted so that you will connect with a customer service representative and provide your account information when requested. The please request a membership cancellation when you speak with a representative. You can then ask if you qualify for a full or partial refund on your annual membership fee, depending on how much and when your last payment was. Hope this helps!
