How to cancel AAA car insurance

Cancel your AAA auto insurance by contacting your regional HQ or local branch.

As the largest automobile association in the US, AAA has offices and local agents dotted around each region. This streamlines its customer service and makes canceling a policy as easy as signing up for one.

When can I cancel my AAA car insurance policy?

AAA car insurance has a flexible cancellation policy. Cancel your coverage at any time, and you’ll receive a prorated refund on your premiums.

But remember that car insurance is a legal requirement in most states. If you’re planning to continue driving, you’ll want to have a new policy in place before your policy expires.

How do I avoid paying AAA’s cancellation fees?

AAA doesn’t advertise a cancellation fee for car insurance, though some users have reported being charged a cancellation fee, depending on the region. If you’re canceling your AAA membership, a 10% fee applies to certain regions, unless you’re canceling during the free-look period.

The 10% fee is calculated on a prorated basis. You’ll be charged 10% of what you would owe for the remainder of your policy. Read the fine print of your policy or contact a local agent to find out if you’ll be subject to that fee.

AAA allows you to cancel your car insurance but keep your membership if you’d like to keep your towing and membership benefits.

What’s the best way to cancel AAA car insurance?

The quickest and most seamless way to cancel your coverage is over the phone. Call your region’s headquarters or your local agent.

You’ll likely have to listen to a last-ditch sales spiel, but if you’re dead set on canceling, the whole process takes a matter of minutes. If you’d rather speak to someone face-to-face, drop in to your local branch.

How can I confirm my AAA policy is canceled?

You’ll receive a final notice in the mail and email, along with a prorated refund of your premium from the date of your cancellation to the end of your term. If you haven’t received a confirmation within three weeks, follow up with AAA.

What should I consider before canceling my policy with AAA?

  • Will there be a gap in my coverage? To avoid a lapse in your car insurance coverage, buy a new policy before you drop the old one. Allowing a gap of even one day can be costly, and not only because you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket if you’re in an accident. Some states penalize registered cars that don’t have continuous coverage, so you might end up with a fine as well as a higher premium when you do purchase a new policy.
  • Are there state laws on proving coverage? Unless you live in New Hampshire or Virginia, it’s illegal to drive without car insurance.
  • Will I lose my perks? Most insurers offer discounts to new customers, but you may lose some perks that come with being a long-time customer with your current insurer. If you’re on a budget, take those costs into consideration.
  • Is there a big life change coming up that could affect my new policy? Major life changes can lead to major savings, so if you know you’re getting married, moving or buying a home soon, you might want to hold off on switching providers to score the best possible rate.

When is the best time to cancel or switch car insurance?

If you wish to switch your insurance, or cancel it altogether, it’s best to do so three to four weeks before your policy’s up for renewal. This gives you time to explore your options, settle on a new provider and qualify for any early shopper discounts. Plus, you can use the details about your coverage, discounts and premiums in your renewal notice to compare coverage.

As with all kinds of insurance, reassess your coverage if your circumstances change. For example, if you get married or buy a house, you could bundle your policies for a discount with a new provider. If your credit has improved or you’ve changed cars, you may be able to score a better rate. And if you’re moving states, it’s worth comparing car insurance providers available in your new state to ensure you’re getting the most out of your coverage. Auto insurance requirements vary state by state, so you may need to make some adjustments.

Should I cancel or adjust my policy?

Your car insurance coverage should suit your situation. If yours no longer does or you’re not satisfied with your carrier’s pricing, customer service or claims process, you may want to cancel outright. With AAA, you’ll get a prorated refund on your remaining premiums, so you won’t be bogged down with a huge financial loss.

There are some perks to staying with your provider, too. You may be eligible for loyalty or renewal discounts. To find out if that’s the case, call customer service or your local agent, who will assess your coverage and current situation.

Bottom line

Sure, your car insurance policy is a contract, but you’re entitled to break it at any time. AAA makes the transition as smooth as possible, allowing customers to cancel online, over the phone or in person and receive a prorated refund on their premiums.

The key is to compare car insurance providers and have a new policy ready to go before canceling your current one.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I let my car insurance coverage lapse?

Are you planning to keep driving? If you cancel your coverage before putting a new policy in place, you run the risk of being:

  • Penalized for driving uninsured. Since auto insurance is a legal requirement in nearly all states, you might face a fine or penalty for not having continuous coverage.
  • Liable for personal injury and property damages in an accident. If you cause an accident, without the protection of a policy, you’ll be financially responsible for any damages.
  • Offered a higher premium in the future. Going without insurance at all can raise your rates. If you have a lapse on your record, future providers might consider you to be more of a risk to insure.

What are the rules to drop my car insurance temporarily?

Unless you have a car loan, most providers will allow you to suspend, cancel or reduce your policy if you’re moving overseas or to a place where you know you definitely won’t be driving, such as New York City. If you’re going away on an international trip or military deployment, for example, but others will be driving the car, you can ask the insurer to remove your name from the policy.

Why do most customers cancel AAA insurance?

Most drivers cancel or switch insurance because of price. AAA customer reviews on various sites tend to mention poor customer service and increased premiums.
