Our verdict
Get paid early, earn cash back and more — but these perks require a paid subscription.
Albert is a fintech company with online banking and financial services provided by its bank partners. It offers a solid all-in-one finance app for those looking to budget, save, invest and access cash advances in one place. Though you can try Albert for 30 days before you're charged, the most basic plan costs $14.99 per month, which isn’t exactly cheap. If you opt for the more expensive plans like Standard and Genius, you could get access to even more benefits, like credit score monitoring, identity protection, cashback rewards and fee-free in-network ATM withdrawals. However, Albert doesn’t offer mobile check deposits, there are no physical branches and many negative reviews complain about being auto-enrolled in its paid plan during signup.
Best for: Those who want an all-in-one, modern banking experience.

Who is Albert best for?
Albert is best for those who don’t mind banking online and want all the bells and whistles of a modern fintech. The Basic plan, which costs $14.99, gives you access to its budgeting and spending tracking tools as well as a savings account with up to 3.25% APY for all users.
But to access its other (and better) perks, such as investing options, cashback rewards, identity protection and credit monitoring, you’ll need to sign up for its higher-tiered plans, which could cost up to $39.99 per month.
If you don’t want to pay a steep monthly fee for the savings account, look to other top savings accounts elsewhere.

What we like about Albert
Albert is a fintech company with banking services provided by Sutton Bank, Member FDIC. Albert Savings accounts are held at FDIC-insured banks, including Wells Fargo, and it gives you access to Allpoint’s extensive network of over 55,000 ATMs.
Modern perks overall
The Albert Cash checking account comes with a debit card that allows you to earn cashback rewards. And if you set up direct deposit with your employer, you can get paid up to two days early.
Albert also offers a popular overdraft service called Albert Instant, which provides up to $250 in free overdraft protection, depending on account activity, transaction history and direct deposits. That said, not all customers will qualify, as the Instant Advance feature is available at Albert’s discretion.
High-yield savings
Albert Savings accounts earn up to 3.25% APY, which is significantly higher than the national average savings rate of 0.39% APY.(1) This makes it a pretty solid option for building your emergency fund or short-term savings. And since Albert partners with FDIC-insured banks, your deposits are protected up to $250,000.
Cashback rewards
If you have theStandard plan or above, you’ll earn cashback rewards with your Albert debit card. Cashback categories and rates can include:
- Up to 10% back at Shell, Chevron and other gas stations
- Up to 20% back at Whole Foods and other grocery stores
- Up to 15% back at Costco, Target and other shops
- Up to 10% back at select fast food restaurants
- Up to 10% back on Uber and Lyft rides
- Up to 15% back on PlayStation, Nintendo and other entertainment purchases
To view cashback offers, head to the Albert app and select Checking, which lets you view available cashback rewards and select the one you want. But you can only activate one cashback offer at a time. Cashback rewards are deposited into your Albert Cash account, usually within three business days.
Modern financial services
Albert offers three financial features:Albert Genius,Albert Investing andSmart Money.
Albert Genius is an AI-powered personal financial assistant that helps you manage money, shop smarter, find discounts, analyze your finances and get quick answers to your questions.
Albert Investing lets you create a custom portfolio of stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which you can manually invest in, or the app can create a portfolio for you. The investing feature works with the Smart Money feature, letting you automatically invest some cash in investment options.
Smart Money analyzes your spending habits and income to estimate how much money you save or invest each week. According to Albert, Smart Money typically saves or invests between $5 and $100 daily, but auto-transfers can be as high as $600 if the app thinks you can afford it. This feature is optional, so there’s no pressure to sign up if you prefer to save cash manually.
Note that some of these features may only be available in certain plans.
Where it falls short
Albert has some unique banking features that make it stand out against competitors, but you’ll need the paid membership to access them — including cashback rewards on your debit card, investing features and financial chat features.
Albert is also way more expensive than it used to be. There used to be a free plan, and now you have to pay at least $14.99 per month.
Reviews complain of free trial troubles
When you sign up for Albert, it automatically enrolls you in a 30-day free trial. If you don’t cancel the paid subscription after the free trial, customers report that Albert automatically bills you for the yearly plan.
To Albert’s credit, these complaints are common with companies that offer limited free trials — they’re easy to forget about.
Compounding the issue, customers also report it’s a struggle to navigate the app and find where to cancel the paid membership. Tack on the fact it automatically bills you for the yearly plan, which costs around $179.88. That’s a big bill to get hit with if you weren’t expecting it.
Albert’s limited customer support doesn’t help the situation. Although Albert lists a customer phone number, it’s automated. You’ll need to send an email or use the app’s chat function to speak with a real person.

How we picked theseWhat is the Finder Score?
The Finder Score crunches over 300 checking accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's monthly fees, overdraft fees, opening deposit, customer support options, ATM network and features — this gives you a simple score out of 10.
To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of checking accounts against what we consider is the best option: no monthly fees, no overdraft fees, a large ATM network of 50,000 or more, additional features outside of typical banking services, and the optional perk of earning interest. Accounts that are nearly free to maintain and use are scored the highest, while accounts with costly fees and few features are scored the lowest.

Albert holds a decent B rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and those ratings are given based on how well a business responds to complaints and customers.
But what’s not so great is Albert’s large number of customer complaints — over 1,400 in the last few years. Most are grievances over being charged for the Genius membership after the free trial ended, with a smattering of other typical banking complaints, like frozen accounts or issues resolving fraudulent charges.
Albert does better on Trustpilot, with well over 5,000 mostly-positive reviews. That said, most of the positive comments were quite vague and didn’t specify what they love about Albert beyond it being a “great app.” Negative reviews were mainly about frustrations with the Albert Instant overdraft feature and surprise subscription charges, noting that it’s not easy to cancel your membership.
