How can I get the best exchange rate between the US dollar and the Omani rial?

The Omani rial is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed value so finding the best exchange rate between the two currencies should be simple. According to official data, the Central Bank of Oman buys US dollars at 0.384 rial and sells US dollars at 0.385 rial.

Omani rials may be hard to come by outside of Oman, so consider exchanging your dollars to rial after you’ve arrived. You’ll find competitive rates in the capital city of Muscat at foreign exchange counters in malls and shopping centers. Rates at the airport may not be as good, but getting at least a small amount of cash there to pay for things like buses and taxis is always a smart move.

If you need to send money to someone in Oman, always pick the money transfer service that offers the lowest fees and exchange rate closest to the mid-market rate. Also, research the reputation of the service provider and read reviews before sending money.

The US dollar is the most traded currency in the world. The world’s unofficial reserve currency, it can be found in most major currency pairs. What affects exchange rates between the US dollar and the Omani rial?

Because the Central Bank of Oman maintains a fixed exchange rate policy with the US dollar, the exchange rate between these two currencies doesn’t change. The only thing that can make the exchange rate change is a modified policy by the Central Bank of Oman.

Things that could affect the opinion of policymakers in Oman in regard to the exchange rate include the performance of the US dollar compared to other major currencies, interest rates in the US, and economic development and inflation in Oman.

An interesting thing to note about the Omani rial is that it ranks number three on the list of the highest-valued currencies in the world, after the Kuwaiti dinar and the Bahraini dinar.

How does the Omani rial trade against the US dollar historically?

The exchange rate of the Omani rial has remained fixed to the US dollar since 1973. Initially the fixing rate was set at 1 rial = 2.895 US dollars, until it was changed to 1 rial = 2.6008 US dollars in 1986.

There has been some speculation in recent years that Oman may be forced to abandon its US dollar peg due to weakening oil prices. According to some media reports, Oman has seen a rapid depletion of its foreign exchange reserves as it works to defend the currency peg. Nevertheless, as of 2018, the Central Bank of Oman says it has no plan on changing the dollar peg.

        Hi Nahashon,

Thank you for leaving a question.

On selling your 100 Baisa note, you may go to a local bank to exchange it or any reputable currency exchange shop near your area. Please note that the currency exchange fluctuates and may be converted at a different price depending on the day you sell the note. Hope this helps!

        Cheers,
        Reggie
