Laybuy was a buy now, pay later (BNPL) provider that was founded in New Zealand and became available in the UK in 2019. Similar to Klarna, Laybuy let you order items from online stores and pay for them later, when you were sure you want to keep them or sure you could afford them.
Similar to other BNPL services, Laybuy partnered with an ever-expanding list of online retailers to offer its service. Once you knew that a store offers Laybuy as a payment option, you could shop on the site as usual and at the checkout select Laybuy as your payment method.
Once you had set up your Laybuy account, the service split the cost of the item into 6 equal weekly payments. The first of these payments (equal to a sixth of the total value of the order) was taken from your account at the time of ordering. Laybuy would automatically take the remaining 5 payments from your account 1 week apart.
No interest was charged, as long as you made your weekly payments.
As of April 2024, more than 1,200 stores and shops offered Laybuy as a payment method in the UK. However Laybuy went into administration in June 2024.

This charge was capped at £24 for every purchase you made. A debt collection agency then may have arranged to collect the outstanding amount from you.
Yes. When you sign up for your Laybuy account the company will perform a credit check on you. Please be aware that this credit check can affect your credit score.
Returns are dependent on the retailer from which you made the original order. If you meet their returns criteria then once the retailer has received the returned item it will refund the money to Laybuy which will in turn refund the money to your nominated account and cancel any future payments.
