The basics

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card is similar to the Blue Cash Preferred® Card, with a few differences. It offers a slightly smaller welcome offer and less cash back than its counterpart. On the plus side, it offers a better intro APR and has no annual fee.

The biggest difference between the two cards is the cash back you’ll receive.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card offers:

  • 3% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%.
  • 2% cash back at US gas stations and some US department stores.
  • 1% cash back on other eligible purchases.

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card offers:

  • 6% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%.
  • 3% cash back at US gas stations and some US department stores.
  • 1% cash back on other eligible purchases.

Should you get one of these cards? And which one should you choose?

To start, determine if most of your spending goes toward gas and groceries. If so, either Blue Cash Card is a good choice.

Next, calculate which card will bring you the biggest benefits. The key factor here is the annual fee: The Blue Cash Preferred® Card has a $95 annual fee, while the Blue Cash Everyday® Card has no annual fee. Consider your spending and whether the cash back you’ll receive is higher than the annual fee. You’ll quickly figure out which card is better for you.

Calculating which Blue Cash card brings you the most cash back

Picking the right Blue Cash card comes down to analyzing your spending and doing some quick math.

Suppose you spend $6,000 a year on groceries:

  • The Blue Cash Preferred® Card gives you 6% cash back, for a total of $360 cash back. It has a $95 annual fee, so you effectively get $265 cash back.
  • The Blue Cash Everyday® Card gives you 3% cash back, for a total of $180 cash back.

That’s a win for the Blue Cash Preferred® Card, and we haven’t factored in what you’ll spend on gas and other purchases.

Of course, you might not spend much on gas and groceries, in which case the Blue Cash Preferred® Card might not be worth it. Check your typical expenses and pick the card that works for you.

You may want accelerated cash back on more than just gas and groceries. In that case, you might fare better with a general cashback card like the Citi® Double Cash Card, which offers 1% cash back as you spend and another 1% as you pay off your purchases.

The perks

  • Annual fee: None.

A $0 annual fee means you don’t have to worry about earning enough rewards to make the card worth paying for.

  • Welcome offer: $150 cash back.

When you spend $1,000 in purchases within the first three months of your account opening, you’ll earn $150 in the form of statement credit.

  • Intro APR: 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months.

This is a strong intro APR — one of the best you’ll find among rewards cards. To receive 0% APR on balance transfers, you must make your transfers within the first 60 days of account opening.

After the intro APR expires, you’ll have a purchase and balance transfer APR of 14.74% to 25.74% variable.

  • Cash back: Up to 3%.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card is best for groceries and gas. Earn 3% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases and 1% afterward, and 2% cash back at gas stations and some department stores.

On other eligible purchases, you’ll earn 1% cash back. Receive cash back in the form of Reward Dollars, which you can redeem for statement credit.

You’ll also like …

  • Travel protection.

You’ll have access to the American Express Global Assist Hotline and Roadside Assistance Hotline, which you can use if you find yourself in a pinch on vacation. Also, get complimentary car rental insurance and travel accident insurance.

  • ShopRunner benefits.

Get a free ShopRunner membership and enjoy free two-day shipping and returns on purchases from stores in the ShopRunner network.

  • Purchase benefits.

You’ll receive extended warranties on eligible items you buy with your card. Also, you may qualify for a refund from American Express if a merchant won’t accept a product as a return 90 days after your purchase. Lastly, your eligible items are covered against theft and accidental damage by purchase protection.

  • Cardmember-only entertainment.

As a cardholder, you’ll have access to exclusive events and ticket presales.

What to watch out for

  • Limited time for balance transfers.

To take advantage of the intro APR for balance transfers, you need to make transfers within the first 60 days after you open your account.

  • Not as widely accepted overseas.

Because the Blue Cash Everyday® Card is an American Express, you might not have as many opportunities to use it overseas as you would a Visa or Mastercard.

  • Penalty APR.

American Express may assess a penalty APR of up to 29.99% if you make a late or returned payment.

  • Foreign transaction fees.

You’ll incur a 2.7% transaction fee if you use your card abroad, and potentially if you use it on a foreign website.

  • Other transaction fees.

You’ll pay a fee when you make a balance transfer or cash advance.

  • It hurts to pay late.

Making late or returned payments could saddle you with fees as high as $38 per infraction.

Consider other cards if …

What should I know before I apply?

To apply for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card, you must be:

    • At least 18 years old.
    • A US citizen or permanent resident.

What credit score do I need?

You’ll have a better chance of being approved for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card if you apply with a good to excellent credit score of 670 or higher. If you have at least a good credit score and a relatively high annual income, you may be the type of customer American Express is looking for.

Here are a few other factors that might affect your odds of approval:

    • How many hard pulls you have on your credit report. If you have several hard inquiries — or hard pulls — on your account, it might make you look desperate for credit. This implies you’re having trouble managing your debt, and American Express may be less likely to take you on as a customer.
    • Factors that tie into your credit score. Credit utilization is a major factor that American Express will consider. Providers prefer customers who have low balances relative to their credit limits. Having many new card accounts may be a red flag, too, as it may indicate you’re desperate for credit. It may also give the impression that you’re a flighty customer who’s just hunting for signup bonuses.

Always consider your options and your financial situation before you apply for a credit card.

What do customers say about the Blue Cash Everyday® Card?

Customers generally have great things to say about the Blue Cash Everyday® Card. Those with families find the card useful, and many cardholders cite the card’s grocery-and-gas cash back as their favorite feature.

American Express earns a Trustpilot score of 3.1 out of 10 at the time of this writing. Many negative reviews cite unhelpful customer service and inflexible company policies. Positive reviews say the company employs pleasant customer service representatives. Overall, your mileage may vary with American Express customer support.

American Express earns an overall A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

How long will it take to get my Blue Cash Everyday® Card?

Because conditional credit card approval is automated on the website, you may get a decision on your application within 60 seconds. If there are issues with your application, it may take a few days to a few weeks to hear back.

After you’re approved, you’ll typically receive your card within 7 to 10 business days.

I got the card. Now what?

    • Make timely payments. Register an account at the American Express website to pay your balance online. You can also enroll in autopay.
    • Avoid interest. After the close of each billing cycle, you have a grace period of at least 25 days to pay your balance. If you do, you won’t pay interest on your purchases.
    • Avoid fees. Late and returned payments come with hefty fees of up to $38. Balance transfers, cash advances and foreign transactions also come with fees.
    • Contact customer service. Help documents aren’t easily accessible on the American Express website, but you can call 1-800-528-4800 for customer service. According to market research company J.D. Power, cardholders give American Express high marks for customer interaction.

    Bottom line

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card offers solid rewards for groceries and gas. Since it has no annual fee, it’s an excellent choice if you want no-fuss cash back. You may want to investigate other American Express credit cards or look into cards from other providers before making your choice to get the card that best fits your daily life.
