Case study: Britny’s experience
I first signed up for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express a few years ago. I was looking for a card with a $0 annual fee that would give me rewards on my day-to-day spending.
I like this card because it had a 0% APR for 15 months and I could get rewards for shopping and gas purchases. I also like that over time I could easily increase my credit limit. However, after that intro period expired, the rate jumped to a high 25.74% — higher than other cards.
I also found that this card is not the best for travel. American Express is not widely accepted abroad, and the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express has a 2.7% foreign transaction fee. This card doesn’t come with travel protections like trip cancellation, baggage or delay coverage.
I ended up getting another travel card with a lower APR for my day-to-day spending and kept this one for emergencies.
What to watch out for
Limited time for balance transfers.
To take advantage of the intro APR for balance transfers, you need to make transfers within the first 60 days after you open your account.
Not as widely accepted overseas.
Because this is an American Express card, you might not have as many opportunities to use it overseas as you would a Visa or Mastercard.
American Express may assess a penalty APR of up to 29.99% variable if you make a late or returned payment. (See rates & fees.)
Foreign transaction fees.
You’ll incur a 2.7% transaction fee if you use your card abroad and potentially if you use it on a foreign website.
Look out for the American Express Blue Cash foreign transaction fee
Many American Express cards have foreign transaction fees, and the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is no different. This makes the card a poorer choice when you travel abroad. You’ll be charged a small fee per foreign purchase, and the fees can add up over many transactions.
Other transaction fees.
You’ll pay a fee when you make a balance transfer or cash advance.
It hurts to pay late.
Making late or returned payments could saddle you with fees as high as $39 per infraction.

What should I know before I apply?

- At least 18 years old.
- A US citizen or permanent resident.
What credit score do I need?
You’ll have a better chance of being approved for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express if you apply with a good to excellent credit score of 680 or higher. If you have at least a good credit score and a relatively high annual income, you may be the type of customer American Express is looking for.
Here are a few other factors that might affect your odds of approval:
How many hard pulls you have on your credit report.
If you have several hard inquiries — or hard pulls — on your account, it might make you look desperate for credit. This implies you’re having trouble managing your debt, and American Express may be less likely to take you on as a customer.
Factors that tie into your credit score.
Credit utilization is a major factor that American Express will consider. Providers prefer customers who have low balances relative to their credit limits. Having many new card accounts may be a red flag, too, as it may indicate you’re desperate for credit. It may also give the impression that you’re a flighty customer who’s just hunting for welcome offers.
