While it’s easy to earn lots of points with the IHG Rewards Club program, it’s more difficult to translate those points to pure value. Still, there are a few ways to get the most out of your Rewards Club points — such as sticking to reward nights at participating hotels.
IHG doesn’t currently offer an awards chart on its website. Instead, reward nights range from 10,000 to 70,000 per night with the points required depending on the hotel. You can browse these reward night requirements with the search feature on the IHG Rewards Club site.
How to redeem points for maximum value
Even when redeemed on reward nights at IHG properties, Rewards Club points average around 0.7 cents per point according to the IHG Rewards Club site as of March 2019. This is somewhat lackluster, especially when compared to World of Hyatt’s strong point values.
Here’s where to spend your points for maximum value.
Book an IHG Rewards Club PointBreak
PointBreaks are limited-time promotional offers on stays at participating hotels worldwide. Stays at PointBreak hotels range from 5,000 to 15,000 per night and can prove quite lucrative.
For example, a stay at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Snyder in Snyder, Texas, currently costs 5,000 points a night. This brings the value of your points up to a respectable 1.6 cents per point, much higher than the average had you redeemed on a standard hotel.
The main limitations of PointBreak deals are location, timing and availability. Participating locations change regularly, so you’ll want to monitor the PointBreak site to find a stay that works for you.
Redeem on IHG reward nights
Redemptions on standard reward nights at IHG properties are your next best redemption option for your Rewards Club points. Unfortunately, IHG doesn’t offer an awards chart detailing the pricing breakdown, so you’ll need to do a little research to find reward nights that provide a good value.
Effective January 2019, IHG increased the points needed for rewards nights for numerous hotels in countries such as the UK, US and Australia.
Properties within the US to receive a point hike were particularly numerous, while some countries such as China and Mexico received point decreases. Consider expanding your vacation options outside of the US to find an ideal point value.
Transfer your point to airlines
While most airline transfers hold a value of around 0.4 cents per Rewards Club point, you might find it occasionally useful to convert them if you need a few more points for redemption with your airline.
Spending with eligible credit cards will be the fastest way to build your point bank with the IHG Rewards Club. Credit cards offer bonus points on eligible purchases as well as useful signup bonuses that can give you a headstart on your redemptions.
