If you frequently stay at IHG properties, consider joining the IHG Rewards Club. While these points may not have the highest value, you’ll get great hotel perks if you reach elite status. The associated perks certainly make the program worth checking out.

IHG response to the coronavirus pandemic

IHG has made the following changes to its rewards program:

  • Membership elite status extended. Elite status members get their membership extended until January 2022.
  • Lower elite status qualification requirements. During 2020, you can become an elite tier member with 25% less qualifying points and qualifying nights. For example, if Gold Elite status required 10,000 points or 10 nights, you can now get this status with 7,000 points or seven nights.
  • Points expiry prolonged. Points don’t expire for elite tier members. For everyone else, your points won’t expire until December 31, 2020. Typically, they expire after 12 months of no activity.
  • InterContinental Ambassador extended. Members who enrolled or renewed their membership before March 15, 2020, get an extended membership for three months. You also get an additional three-month extension on unredeemed complimentary weekend nights.

What is the IHG Rewards Club program?

The IHG Rewards Club is a loyalty program by the InterContinental Hotels Group. As a member, you get to earn points on IHG hotels and resorts stays, which you can redeem for a variety of rewards.

There’s no cost to becoming an IHG Rewards Club member. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Visit the IHG website and click IHG Rewards Club.
  2. Scroll down the page and click Join now.
  3. Fill out the form with your personal and contact information and you’re good to go.

What can you redeem your IHG points for

IHG may not have as many redemption options as similar reward programs, but there’s still a variety of rewards to choose from. For example, you can redeem points for IHG hotel stays, you can shop via the IHG online catalog, you can redeem for gift cards, ebooks, games and movies, or you can transfer points to 40 airline partners.

How to earn IHG points

You can earn points on your IHG hotel stays as a member of the program. However, you can earn even more points if you climb the ladder of elite status tiers or if you use an IHG cobranded credit card.

You have two cards to choose from if you want an IHG cobranded card. In addition to earning a signup bonus, these cards also provide other Rewards Club benefits, such as helping you gain elite status faster.

The Chase Ultimate Rewards line of credit cards can also help you earn IHG Rewards Club points. Each Ultimate Rewards point you earn can transfer to your IHG Rewards Club account at a 1:1 ratio, provided you have a premium Chase card.

Given the more diverse earning options of the Chase cards, you might consider one of these cards over IHG’s cobranded cards if you don’t frequently stay at IHG hotels.

    Bottom line

Even with its somewhat lackluster point values, the IHG Rewards Club program could be worth it if you regularly stay at IHG branded hotels and want to take advantage of the associated hotel perks. Make sure to review your IHG redemption options to get the most value from your points.

If you want to invest in the program, apply for the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card to get a shortcut to the valuable Platinum Elite status. And if you only occasionally stay at IHG hotels, a Chase Ultimate Rewards card offers a strong mix of earning options while still helping you earn IHG points.
