10 ways to earn IHG Rewards Club points

Earn miles with credit cards

Like many rewards programs, using eligible credit cards is one of the fastest ways to accumulate lots of points. These cards typically provide bonus points on everyday spending and offer a signup bonus when spending requirements are met. You have two card options: an IHG cobranded credit card, or a general card that can transfer points to your IHG account.

Using an IHG cobranded credit card is the simplest way to earn points with a card. Points earned with a cobranded card are deposited directly into your account with no additional work needed on your end. An IHG cobranded card also comes with IHG-specific perks and benefits you won’t find on standard reward cards.

If you’re not interested in IHG’s cobranded cards but still want to earn IHG points, you can use a Chase rewards card to earn transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your IHG Rewards Club account at a 1:1 ratio. Select your credit score below and click “Show Cards” for a side-by-side comparison of eligible cards that can earn IHG points.

Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points

While you can earn Ultimate Rewards points with all of the above cards, you can only transfer points to other programs using the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

Unfortunately, transferring Chase points to IHG isn’t the most valuable use of Chase points. You’ll find several Chase travel partners that can double or even triple the value of a single Chase Ultimate Rewards point. Still, having the flexibility to transfer points is a strong asset. Check out our guide to redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards points for more details.

Stay at IHG properties

Earning points during your IHG hotel stays is fairly simple. So long as you’re an IHG Rewards Club member, you’ll earn points for every dollar spent on eligible purchases. The points you earn depends on which hotel brand you’re staying with.

The IHG Rewards Club program has four levels of elite status. Progressing through these tiers will help you earn additional bonus points based on your tier level. For more information check out our full IHG Rewards Club guide.

IHG Rewards Club Dine & Earn

IHG Rewards

Using the IHG dining program, you can earn up to eight points for every dollar spent on meals at eligible dining partners. The number of points you earn depends on your status within the Dine & Earn program. There are three levels:

Basic member. Earn 1x points.
Select member. Earn 5x points.
VIP member. Earn 8x points.

You can also earn bonus points with two dining partners: OpenTable and Grubhub. This is a useful perk if you tend to eat local. Booking a reservation through OpenTable reservation or ordering Grubhub delivery through IHG can both earn you up to 500x bonus points.

Shop at Apple

You can earn 4x points per dollar spent on Apple products when you make your purchase through the IHG Apple portal. Actually finding this portal is a bit tricky since IHG doesn’t have a traditional store portal. You can check out the portal directly here — simply follow the instructions to earn your points. You’ll have a small wait before you see your bonus points, as they won’t post to your account until the return window on the Apple product is over.

Complete surveys

When you join the IHG Rewards Club and complete your first consumer survey, IHG will reward you with 1,000 bonus points. You can continue to earn points by signing up and completing surveys as they’re available. The points you earn ranges from survey to survey, but they’re loosely based on the length of the survey.

Book an activity

Through the IHG Trip Extras program, you can earn 1,000 bonus points every time you book an activity through IHG. Activities include guided tours, hikes and other experiences.

Save the environment

Interestingly, IHG lets you earn points when you make planet-friendly choices at participating hotels. You can earn 500 points when you decline housekeeping services during your IHG stay.

Earning these points requires a minimum two-night stay and you can only earn up to 500 regardless of your total nights.

Car rentals

Booking a car rental through IHG’s travel portal allows you to earn points and potentially save on the base rate of your rental. Your earning rate and perks depend on the rental:

Other promotions

Like many loyalty programs, the IHG Rewards Club regularly cycles offers in and out of the program. Check regularly with the IHG site or the IHG Rewards Club mobile app to find the latest promos that will let you earn additional points on travel, dining, purchases and more.

Earning airline miles

Rather than earn points, you can choose to earn partnered airline miles instead during your IHG hotel stays. The number of miles you’ll earn depends on the airline, so check out the IHG Rewards Club site for full details.

Bottom line

The IHG Rewards Club program offers solid earning potential thanks to its status tier bonuses and strong credit card options. Pick up one of IHG’s cobranded cards or a premium Chase Ultimate Rewards card to boost your earning potential and start saving for rewards.

Once you’ve built your point collection, compare your redemption options to make the most of your hard-earned points.
