Our verdict

Earn more than $400 in value each year with Capital One’s first luxury travel card.

The Venture X is a travel card from Capital One and the first luxury travel card offered by the provider. It earns 10x miles on hotel and rental car purchases booked through Capital One Travel, a flat 2x miles on all purchases and 5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel. The card also comes with a welcome offer of 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases within your first 3 months of account opening, and a bevy of travel perks to help offset the card’s $395 annual fee.

When you look at the Venture X against Capital One’s other travel card options, the Venture X stands in a league of its own. It earns comparable flat miles to the Venture Rewards, but offers additional earning categories as well as additional perks you won’t find on the Venture.

The card offers up to a $300 annual statement credit for bookings made on Capital One Travel for example and also offers a 10,000 mile bonus each account anniversary. The card also offers access to Capital One Lounges as well as up to a $100 credit toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.

As long as you’re traveling reliably and booking through Capital One, this card pays for itself each year with hardly any effort. The question then is how does the Venture X stand against the other luxury cards on the market? The Venture X seems to play it on the safe side: technically speaking, every luxury travel card on the market can pay for itself through perks, so it comes down to how easily you can pay off that annual fee and how much you enjoy those specific perks.

There’s no question that the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express both offer more perks than the Venture X, but the Venture X is much less expensive and much easier to pay off through light travel. Capital One also has its own collection of travel partners that you can transfer points to, though not all transfer partners allow a 1:1 ratio.

On the whole, the Venture X is a terrific and much-needed addition to the Capital One travel lineup, allowing it to compete on the luxury travel market while offering additional value to consumers.

Pros

  • Welcome offer. Earn 75,000 miles when you spend $4,000 in your first 3 months of account opening.
  • Earn miles. Earn 10X miles on hotel and car rental purchases made through Capital One travel, 5X miles on flights booked through Capital One travel, and 2X miles on all other purchases. You can redeem these miles through Capital One and even transfer them to travel partners.
  • Numerous credits. You'll receive up to $300 back in statement credits each year when you book through Capital One Travel and 10,000 miles each card account anniversary starting on your first anniversary. These two perks alone pay for the cost of the card.

Cons

  • Not all travel partners transfer at 1:1 ratios. Most, but not all, of Capital One's travel partners allow for 1:1 transferring of your miles.
  • No intro APR. You won't find an intro APR on purchases or balance transfers with this luxury card.

How to apply for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Apply for the Venture X by doing the following.

  1. Learn more about how to apply for Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card benefits

  • Earn miles. The Venture X earns 10x miles on hotel and rental car purchases booked through Capital One Travel, 5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel, and 2x miles on every other purchase. These rates are in line with the points you can earn on travel with the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum Card, though those cards feature more earning categories overall.
  • Welcome offer. Earn 75,000 miles after you spend $4,000 in your first 3 months of account opening. This is a sizable sum to spend, but it’s also a sizable welcome offer and easily worth at least $750 in value.
  • Travel credit. You’ll receive up to $300 in travel credits on bookings made through Capital One Travel each year.
  • Travel partners. Capital One has 15+ travel partners to choose from, each allowing you to transfer your earned miles. Capital One has also recently teamed up with VirginRed.
  • Anniversary miles. You’ll get 10,000 bonus miles every year starting on your first card anniversary.
  • TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit. You’ll receive up to a $100 credit toward your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee.
  • Airport lounge access. You’ll receive unlimited complimentary access for you and two guests to Capital One Lounges and the Partner Lounge Network with this card.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card Drawbacks

  • Not all points transfer at 1:1. While this isn’t a knock on the card itself, not all of Capital One’s travel partners allow mile transfers at a 1:1 ratio. Other providers like Chase allow 1:1 transfers on all of their travel partners.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card customer reviews and complaints

The Venture X is relatively new to the market and it’ll take some time before customers get their hands on this piece of plastic and run it through its paces. Capital One is however listed on Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot, both of which rate an organization based on customer experience and reviews.

Bottom line

Capital One’s Venture X is an excellent addition to Capital One’s travel lineup and in combination with changes to the provider’s travel partner transfer ratios seems to point toward a greater focus on travel benefits for its customers.

It offers the level of value you’d expect from a luxury travel card offering while maintaining a lower annual fee than its competitors. That makes this a great card for those who travel often but don’t necessarily feel compelled to push the limits of a card’s perks. But if this card doesn’t quite hit the mark for your needs, compare your travel card options to find one that best fits.
