Does Capital One have purchase protection?

Get coverage against theft and damage on eligible purchases.

Purchase protection is a useful perk that can reimburse you if someone steals an item you bought with your credit card, like an iPhone or laptop. Purchase protection can also give you coverage for repairs if an item is damaged. While this useful feature is free to use, not every card comes with it.

Does Capital One have purchase protection?

Capital One offers purchase protection but only to Visa Signature and Visa business credit cards. If you get a Visa Platinum credit card, you won’t get purchase protection.

This feature provides 90 days coverage from the day you make your eligible purchase against theft and damage of a product, but does not cover you if you’ve experienced a loss due to fraud in a service. The amount of coverage is $500 per occurrence and $50,000 per account.

Since Visa offers this feature, you’ll find it as purchase security. Unlike purchase protection, purchase security won’t cover your item if you accidentally drop it. It will only cover items in the event of theft, damage due to fire, vandalism, or accidentally discharged water or certain weather conditions.

How to use Capital One purchase protection

To use Capital One purchase protection, all you have to do is:

  1. Make an eligible purchase with your Visa Signature credit card.
  2. Call your card benefit administrator at 800-553-4820 within 60 days of the occurrence.
  3. The benefit administrator will send out a claim form.
  4. Submit the completed form along with any additional documents within 90 days of the occurrence.
  5. Wait for your claim to be either approved or denied.

Who gets to use Capital One purchase protection?

The main cardholder who uses the Capital One Visa Signature or Visa business credit card gets to use this perk.

Bottom line

Capital One purchase protection is a cool feature to have, especially since it costs nothing extra to use. Unfortunately, Visa Platinum cardholders don’t get to use this perk, and you don’t know the type of Visa card you’ll get until after you’re approved.

If you don’t want to risk a hard pull on your credit to apply for a card and end up without this feature, consider other cards with purchase protection.
