Expert review

The Avianca Vuela Visa® Card comes with an annual fee of $149 and a generous signup bonus of 40,000 miles after you make your first purchase.

In addition, you get to earn 3x points on Avianca purchases, 2x miles at gas stations and grocery stores; you get a 0% intro APR period on balance transfers for your first 12 months; and you can earn a 50% discount when redeeming flights from the US to Colombia or Central America as long as you meet the spend requirements.

The Avianca Vuela Visa® Card may seem expensive at first glance. But if you often fly to South or Central America or within the US with Star Alliance partner airlines — this card may have an incredibly lucrative value.

Card benefits

  • Signup bonus.
Make your first purchase within 90 days of your account opening to earn 40,000 bonus LifeMiles. This is high value for an easy-to-get signup bonus, which — according to the LifeMiles website — can get you seats in business or first class on flights within the Americas.
  • LifeMiles.
Earn 3x miles on Avianca purchases, 2x miles at gas stations and grocery stores and 1x miles on everything else you buy.
  • Intro APR period on balance transfers.
Get a 0% intro APR period on balance transfers for your first 12 months of card membership. Once the intro period passes, your rate reverts to variable 13.24% to 26.24%.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
Use your card freely when traveling outside of the US without paying any foreign transaction fees.
  • Checked baggage.
Get a second checked bag for free when traveling between the US and Central America.
  • Award ticket discount.
Get a 50% discount when redeeming an award flight from the US to Colombia or Central America. You’ll have to spend $12,000 annually with your card to get the discount. Spend $24,000 annually to get another 50% discount.
  • Discount on miles purchases.
If you purchase miles with the Multiply Your Miles feature, you’ll get a 15% discount. You can purchase multiplications of miles that you’ve earned on Avianca flights by using your Avianca Vuela Visa® Card or the miles you’ve earned with Avianca’s commercial partners.

What to watch out for

  • Annual fee.
To get the premium Avianca perks, expect to pay a $149 annual fee.
  • Balance transfer limitations.
Make your transfer within your first 90 days of account opening to get the intro APR period. Otherwise, the standard APR of 13.24% to 26.24% variable applies.
  • Penalty APR.
Missing a minimum payment for 60 consecutive days can get you a fixed penalty APR of 29.99%. Once applied it sticks around until you pay the amount due and keep paying your balance on time for six consecutive months.
