Must read: US sanctions on Sudan
The US Department of State removed sanctions on Sudan in 2017, but money transfer companies have been slow to enter the market. In a 2017 press statement, Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert wrote:
“Today, the United States decided to revoke economic sanctions with respect to Sudan and the Government of Sudan under Executive Orders 13067 and 13412, in recognition of the Government of Sudan’s sustained positive actions to maintain a cessation of hostilities in conflict areas in Sudan, improve humanitarian access throughout Sudan, and maintain cooperation with the United States on addressing regional conflicts and the threat of terrorism.”
In short, this means that although you’re legally allowed to send remittances to Sudan, it’s still up to money transfer companies to support the corridor. For more information, refer to the US Department of State Sudan sanctions page.
