Typical features of a Marriott credit card

Some features are card-specific, but all Marriott credit cards come with:

  • Marriott points.
All of the cards let you earn Marriott points on your everyday purchases with an accelerated rate on Marriott purchases. But the rewards rate you earn depends on your credit card.
  • Welcome offer.
You get to earn a generous welcome offer with whichever Marriott card you choose.
  • Elite status.
Start with Silver or Gold elite status and enjoy Marriott perks just by being a cardmember.
No foreign transaction fees. You can travel abroad and safely use your Marriott credit cards without fear of incurring foreign transaction fees.

Marriott Bonvoy, signup bonuses, and you

The Marriott Bonvoy credit cards are “refreshed” versions of the old Marriott and Starwood Preferred Guest credit cards. As Marriott and SPG merged into the Marriott Bonvoy program, the old card offerings were reformed into new Marriott Bonvoy offerings.

This throws a small wrench into things if you once held an SPG card that has since converted into a Marriott Bonvoy card. Specifically, these cards are considered one and the same product under the signup bonus rules with Chase and Amex.

That means if you once held a Starwood Preferred Guest Luxury Card from American Express and closed the account, you won’t be eligible for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card’s signup bonus. Under Amex’s rules, you can only earn one signup bonus per card, per lifetime.

Chase has slightly more lenient rules: you can earn a signup bonus on the same card once every 24 months. That means if you once owned the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus, you can only earn the signup bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless if 24 months have passed since you gained the signup bonus on the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus.

Here’s a quick breakdown of which SPG card turned into which Marriott Bonvoy card, where applicable:

  • Starwood Preferred Guest Luxury Card from American Express = Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card
  • Starwood Preferred Guest Business Card from American Express = Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card
  • Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Visa Signature = Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card

Bottom line

Whichever Marriott credit card you choose, you can earn a generous welcome offer, Marriott points on your purchases and you won’t pay foreign transaction fees. However, each credit card offers a unique feature you could find useful depending on your needs.

If you think there could be a better card for you, compare other hotel credit cards to find the perfect fit for your wallet. If you’re particularly interested in a Chase card, there are other options for hotel credit cards from Chase.
