Guide to Marriott Bonvoy rewards program

Make the most of your Marriot hotel stays by taking advantage of these rewards.

Updated

Marriott Bonvoy is the unified rewards program comprised of the former Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and Ritz-Carlton Rewards. It’s a straightforward rewards program with decent earning and redemption options on Marriott brands.

Starwood Preferred Guest is now part of Marriott Bonvoy

SPG merged with Marriott Rewards and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards in August 2018, and rebranded to Marriott Bonvoy in February 2019.

This was a big deal in the travel world and came with many changes. The programs now share the same elite system. Also, the points you earn in each program can be redeemed for nights at eligible properties in all three portfolios.

How much are Marriott Bonvoy points worth?

On average, each Marriott Bonvoy point is worth between 0.8 and 1.0 cents as of March 2019. This is based on our calculations from the Marriott Bonvoy site.

How do you earn Marriott Bonvoy points?

There are two primary methods: booking stays at Marriott branded hotels and spending with eligible credit cards.

Making purchases with credits cards is the fastest way to earn Bonvoy points, particularly with a cobranded Marriott card. For example, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card will earn you 6x additional points per dollar spent on Marriott Bonvoy hotels and automatically grants you Silver Elite membership upon account opening.

This card also has a strong signup bonus: Earn 75,000 points when you spend $3,000 within the first 3 months of account opening.

Loyalty program elite levels

Marriott Bonvoy elite tiers

Marriott Bonvoy offers a loyalty program with six levels, each requiring an increasing number of hotel stays for eligibility. As you progress through the tiers, you gain additional benefits and perks on your Bonvoy account. Among these perks is a bonus to your Marriott Bonvoy reward points earned when you stay at an eligible hotel.

Here are some of the other rewards you’ll earn by moving through the elite ranks:

Members — 0 to 9 nights a year

Regardless of whether you want to move up in elite tiers, it’s worth joining Marriott Bonvoy. You’ll get a discount on most stays, so joining pays dividends in real dollars.

Silver Elite — 10 to 24 nights a year

Silver Elite comes with all of the benefits of Member tier. You’ll also get a points bonus among other perks.

Gold Elite — 25 to 49 nights a year

Gold Elite tier includes benefits of lower tiers and valuable perks like room upgrades.

Platinum Elite — 50 to 74 nights a year

Platinum Elite comes with the benefits of lower tiers plus other even bigger perks. Even later checkout is a nice touch, as are complimentary lounge access and an annual choice benefit.

Titanium Elite — 75 to 99 nights a year

Get all the perks of lower tiers with Titanium Elite. Among other extras, you have additional options for your annual choice benefit.

Ambassador Elite — 100 or more nights a year and $20,000 in annual qualifying spending

In addition to benefits from lower tiers, this tier comes with personalized Ambassador Service and the flexibility of Your24. One exception with Ambassador Elite is you won’t earn an Annual Choice Benefit.

Lifetime Elite status

You’ll earn Lifetime Elite status depending on the number of nights you’ve earned and how long you’ve been an Elite. Here are the requirements for different tiers of Lifetime Elite status:

  • Lifetime Silver Elite: 250 lifetime nights and 5 years of Elite status
  • Lifetime Gold Elite: 400 lifetime nights and 7 years of Gold Elite status or higher
  • Lifetime Platinum Elite: 600 lifetime nights and 10 years of Platinum Elite status or higher

Earning more points: Elite status

In addition to base points, you can earn bonus points through elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy program.

For example, as a Silver Elite member, you’ll earn a 10% bonus on your base points. Instead of earning 10x points, then, you’ll earn 11x points. This bonus increases as you move up in elite tiers.

table on bonus points

You can earn up to a 75% bonus on base points through elite status.

Credit card elite perks

If you’re a Marriott Bonvoy cardholder, Marriott may grant you a complimentary elite status depending on your card.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card, for example, offers Gold Elite status upon account opening while the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card from Chase offers Silver Elite status for opening your account.

Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?

Points can expire if your Marriott Bonvoy account has no qualifying activity for 24 consecutive months. The exception is if you’ve gained Lifetime Elite status, in which case your points will never expire. After five years without qualifying activity, Marriott may deactivate your account.

How to stay active in Marriott Bonvoy

  • Have completed stays — paid and award — on your account
  • Earn points in the program by using your Marriott Bonvoy cobranded credit card, earning rewards through a travel or program partner, holding an eligible event or meeting or a similar action
  • Redeem points
  • Convert points to airline miles or vice versa
  • Buy points

These activities won’t keep you active in Marriott Bonvoy

  • Gifting or transferring points
  • Receiving points from a gift or transfer
  • Earning points through social media initiatives such as #MarriottBonvoyPoints

Bottom line

Marriott Bonvoy is a solid program, albeit one that requires a fairly heavy commitment for the best value. If you’re a Marriott loyalist, or you find yourself staying at their brand of hotels more often than not, consider signing up for this program.

Compare your Marriott credit card options along with other travel credit cards to find a card that best suits your purchasing and travel needs.
