Before you sign up with a debt relief company

Debt relief companies typically charge a percentage of a customer’s debt or a monthly program fee for their services. And not all companies are transparent about these costs or drawbacks that can negatively affect your credit score. Depending on the company you work with, you might pay other fees for third-party settlement services or setting up new accounts, which can leave you in a worse situation than when you signed up.

Consider alternatives before signing up with a debt relief company:

  • Payment extensions. Companies you owe may be willing to extend your payment due date or put you on a longer payment plan if you ask.
  • Nonprofit credit counseling. Look for free debt-management help from nonprofit organizations like the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.
  • Debt settlement. If you can manage to pay a portion of the bill, offer the collection agency a one-time payment as a settlement. Collection agencies are often willing to accept a lower payment on your debt to close the account.

Bottom line

Remember that you have rights when it comes to paying your debts. All debt collection agencies must comply with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). If you're unsure what to do if an agency contacts you, read about how to deal with debt collectors, or if you find your debts too overwhelming to handle on your own, consider debt relief options.

Frequently asked questions

Is a creditor a debt collector?

No, a creditor is someone who lends you money — like a bank or a credit card company. A debt collector is a third party, hired by a creditor to collect debt.

How do I find out which creditor has my debt?

To find out which company has your debt you can check your credit report or contact your creditors.

How do I know if a debt collector is legit?

If you get a phone call from someone saying they’re a debt collector, be sure to ask them questions. Ask them their name and the company they represent and check a directory to confirm. Be sure to ask which creditor sent them your debt. Don’t give any money until you’re certain your debt is being paid and you’re not being scammed.
