USAA is known for its customer service and its association with those that have served in the military. But if you feel you’re ready to move your insurance needs elsewhere, USAA’s auto insurance makes it easy to cancel your policy.
USAA lets you cancel your policy at any time. The easiest way to cancel is to call, though customers have noted that wait times can be long and you’ll have to mail in signed documents. You’re not charged a cancellation fee and could even receive a prorated refund of your unused premiums.
It’s possible to cancel your USAA auto insurance policy by sending an email, calling or sending a letter in the mail. USAA offices are sparse, with locations only in a handful of states. But if you live near one of its locations, canceling in person is a quick way to get the documents you need. Unfortunately, you can’t cancel your policy from its mobile app.
USAA doesn’t charge any cancellation fees. The only way you’ll pay a fee for canceling your auto insurance policy is if you let your policy lapse without informing USAA. In this case, you’ll be responsible for paying the policy premium and any late fees. Calling USAA to cancel prevents you from paying any fees, regardless of how much time is left on your policy. If you find a charge on your account after you’ve canceled your policy, call or send a message to customer service to ask about it. These charges could have come from coverage before you canceled.
USAA prefers cancellation over the phone, but if you run into problems, you can cancel by email instead. Its site claims that customer support is available 24/7, but if they don’t respond to your messages, try posting in its customer support forum, as they seem to respond regularly. There’s also an option to cancel by mail, if you prefer.
It’s also possible that you’ll need to mail in a signature page in addition to canceling by phone or online.
Privately messaging a customer service agent through the USAA site can be an effective way to cancel your policy. You’ll need to register online and log in to your account to access this option.
Calling customer service at 210-531-8722 or 800-531-8722 is the simplest and recommended way to cancel with USAA. However, according to online reviews, USAA is known to have longer wait times compared to other companies.
Mailing in your policy cancellation request letter is an option. Include why you’d like to cancel your policy, along with the following information:
Canceling by mail takes time, so leave at least 30 days from when you send your letter to when you’d like your policy to end.

When you cancel your policy with USAA, you won’t pay any fees and may even be prorated for unused days you’ve paid for. Check your state laws surrounding insurance coverage before you cancel. Some states require you to report your change in insurance to the state, and others have specific minimum requirements for coverage.
Plan your new coverage to begin when your USAA policy ends. It’s important not to leave a lapse in coverage, because even a day or two without insurance can lead to higher rates, or worse — full financial responsibility if you’re at fault in an accident. If you’ve bundled your USAA car and home insurance, you can expect your premium to adjust after you cancel your car coverage.
The best time to cancel your car insurance is 30 days before your new policy kicks in to make sure there’s no gap in coverage. However, you can cancel any time during your policy without extra fees or hassles. Most people cancel their policies if they move, get married or find an insurer that better suits their needs.
The best way to see if your policy is canceled is by logging in to your online account and checking its status. You should also receive a certified confirmation letter by mail, but this could take longer. If you’re unsure of the status of your cancellation, give USAA a call to find out.
If you’re canceling because you feel you can get a better deal elsewhere, call customer service. Users say that the USAA customer support team is helpful and eager to offer discounts or adjustments to your account if you call. It’s commitment to service members and their families make it a unique auto insurance company that could be difficult to match.
Canceling your USAA auto insurance doesn’t come with a fee and can be done online, over the phone or by mail. But before you cancel, you’ll likely want to have a new auto insurance company lined up. Shop around and compare car insurance companies to find the right company for you.
