How do I choose the best credit card for Airbnb?

When you compare Airbnb credit cards, consider the following:

  • Airbnb-inclusive rewards. Make sure the card you’re considering offers rewards for hotels and homestays and includes Airbnb in this classification.
  • Cancellation insurance. For added peace of mind in extenuating circumstances, opt for a card that offers trip cancellation and interruption insurance, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
  • International travel. If you frequently travel abroad for business, scout for a card with no foreign transaction fees, like all the cards on our best list.
  • Signup bonuses. Plenty of travel cards have welcome offers that award you with extra travel rewards — but you often need to meet a specific spending threshold to unlock the bonus.

Will my credit card protect me if my Airbnb host cancels?

Even if your credit card doesn’t offer trip cancellation protection, you may still be eligible for a refund if your Airbnb host cancels. Airbnb’s host cancellation policy states that if your host cancels your reservation, Airbnb will fully refund the cost of the reservation. Refunds can take up to 15 business days to appear in your account.

If you need to cancel a booking made through Airbnb, your refund will depend on your host’s cancellation policy. If you’re unable to receive a refund through your host’s cancellation policy, it’s possible that your trip may be covered under Airbnb’s extenuating circumstances policy — in which case, you’ll need to contact Airbnb to file an extenuating circumstances claim.

What are some alternatives to Airbnb credit cards?

You don’t have to limit yourself to Airbnb to earn rewards on your stays. There are other options you could consider, such as:

Bottom line

With the right credit card, you can earn rewards on your Airbnb purchases. Often, redeeming for Airbnb stays comes with lower value, so consider redeeming rewards on flights instead to get the most of your Airbnb credit card.

But if you think other options would suit you better, compare travel credit cards until you find the right card for your needs.
