Expert review

The BancorpSouth Mastercard® Student Card offers a simple avenue for students to start building their credit. It charges no annual fee, comes with a 17.4% variable APR and comes with an assortment of financial tools to help you manage your finances.

BancorpSouth notes on its website that all its cards earn 1x point per dollar spent that you can redeem on travel, gift cards and more. However, it seems you need to enroll your card first to start earning points. Either way, 1x point per dollar is fair but far from the best reward rate you can earn on a student card. This card also seems to lack an introductory APR on purchases or balance transfers, both of which are useful for a student just heading into college.

There are worse options than the BancorpSouth Mastercard® Student Card, but there are also plenty of stronger cards from major providers. If you’re not a BancorpSouth loyalist, check out your other options first.

BancorpSouth Mastercard® Student Card customer reviews and complaints

The BancorpSouth Mastercard® Student Card isn’t widely reviewed by customers on social media as of October 2021, which isn’t surprising given BancorpSouth is a smaller local bank. With that said, BancorpSouth carries a B+ rating with the Better Business Bureau as of October 2021, though the bank is not accredited with the organization. However, it has a rating of 3.2 with Trustpilot.

Bottom line

While the BancorpSouth Mastercard® Student Card has fair rates and terms, it lacks enough punch to let it compete with the larger providers on the market — particularly when it comes to rewards and perks. Check out some other student cards for a better idea of what’s out there before making your move on this card.
