Our verdict

Free federal and state tax filing, but it’s probably best for those with simple tax situations.

Cash App is best for those who have simple taxes or are already familiar with the filing process. Cash App is free and offers a maximum refund guarantee, free audit defense and an accurate calculation guarantee. However, it doesn’t support only doing a state return — you must e-file your federal return before you can file a state one. And keep in mind that you’re only eligible to use Cash App for taxes if you download the app and create an account.

Best for: Cash App customers with simple tax returns in supported states.

What we like about Cash App’s tax filing service

Formerly known as Credit Karma Tax, Cash App e-filing is available in 40 states and the District of Columbia for free.

Similar to other e-filing tax software, Cash App only shows you sections you need to complete based on your tax situation. You can also upload your W-2 by taking a photo of it. And you can switch between the app and a computer whenever you want.

No cost to file

Cash App Taxes is entirely free for all filers it accepts. There’s no cost to file your state or federal return, and there are no plan tiers or “upgrades” to encounter during the process.

Accepts most typical situations

Cash App supports the typical tax situations you’d expect, such as W-2 wages and 1099 income. Here are just some of the typical tax forms and schedules it supports:

  • W-2 Wages
  • 1040 US Individual Income Tax Return
  • 1040-SR US Individual Income Tax Return for Seniors
  • 1095-B and 1095-C Health Coverage
  • 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement
  • 1098-E Student Loan Interest Statement
  • 1099-MISC Miscellaneous Income
  • Schedule 1: Additional Income and Adjustments to Income
  • Schedule B Interest and Ordinary Dividends
  • SSA-1099 Social Security Benefit Statement
  • 2106 Employee Business Expenses
  • 8283 Non-cash Charitable Contributions

Max refund, accurate calculations and audit defense

If you file an amended return using a different online service and receive a bigger refund or find out you owe less, Cash App will pay you up to $100 in the form of a gift card to cover the difference.

If the IRS or your state tax authority penalizes you due to a calculation error, Cash App will reimburse you up to $1,000 in the form of a gift card. However, some other tax programs offer greater guarantees, including TaxAct, which will reimburse up to $100,000 for any penalties and interest you’re required to pay due to miscalculations caused by its software.
.
And lastly, Cash App automatically checks your return for accuracy and provides an Audit Defense service for free.

Where it falls short

To file taxes with Cash App, you’ll need a Cash App account. It’s first and foremost a peer-to-peer (P2P) payment app, and there are no fees or opening deposits to use its P2P or mobile banking service. But if you don’t have a Cash App account, you’ll have to go through the hoops to get one before you can file your taxes through the app.

Also, you must submit your federal return first before you can do your state return. This isn’t a con of Cash App Taxes alone, as most e-filed tax returns require you to either submit your federal return first or submit them at the same time.

Some online tax software, such as TurboTax, lets you submit federal and state returns together if you’d rather go that route.

Not ideal for complicated returns

Cash App isn’t the perfect option for all filers. It has a good number of limitations, and just based on the situations it doesn’t support, it’s likely best for a single person who hasn’t moved states within the last 12 months or so.

There are also a few states it doesn’t support e-filing for, including New Hampshire and Tennessee, since they have “special” filings that Cash App can’t do.

Here are just some of the tax situations Cash App Taxes doesn’t support:

  • Filing only state returns (requires federal before state filing)
  • Multiple state filings
  • Part-year state filing
  • Non-resident state filing
  • Return filings for those residing outside of the US
  • Prior year return filings
  • Foreign earned income
  • Underpayment penalty calculations or payments
  • Married filing separately returns in community property states
  • Federal earned income tax credit (EITC) when filing head of household status with no dependents

Cash App is a well-known P2P payment app, and the majority of its customer reviews are about those services. It is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and gets high ratings on Trustpilot, which surprised us, considering most financial apps don’t do well in that area.

BBB complaints and reviews are what we expected, as most people only leave BBB complaints if something goes amiss. Customers talk of horrible customer support, reports of being hacked or scammed through P2P transactions, accounts being closed and failed attempts at resolving fraudulent charges. After reading through dozens of complaints and reviews, the most common one is from customers saying they were scammed and are trying to get their money back.

On Trustpilot, things are mixed, but overall, Cash App has a high star rating. Happy customers say it’s convenient, they like the lack of monthly or overdraft fees with the Cash App card, appreciate the investing options, custom card options, fast deposits, the cashback rewards, and overall, most say the app works as expected and advertised.

What do people on Reddit say?

There’s a Cash App subreddit, r/CashApp, often full of customers asking for help on how to get their money back after getting scammed. There are a few threads about people asking how safe Cash App is, and the most common sentiment is that Cash App is safe — as long as you’re not sending money to strangers. Long-time users report being able to safely and easily send money to friends and family with no issues but say that you have to take precautions and verify that you’re sending money to the people you intend. Customers say that if you accidentally send money to a scammer, it’s very unlikely that you’ll ever get that money back since you “approved” the transaction.

We were also able to find customer experiences on using Cash App to file taxes. Most say it was a simple and easy process with no issues. Some report that it took a few days for the IRS to approve and officially receive their return, but that’s typical. Many customers reported back, saying it was processed and they received their refunds after about two weeks of filing.
