Our verdict

Affordable DIY tax prep with simple pricing and basic guidance, but it doesn’t support filing in all states.

As its name implies, ezTaxReturn is a straightforward way to file your taxes online. It offers one simple plan, which includes a free federal return for qualified filers who have a simple tax situation. Like many other online tax preparation services, ezTaxReturn offers step-by-step guidance to help you file your taxes correctly. It also comes with maximum refund guarantees. That said, if your tax situation is more complex, such as having self-employment income or itemized deductions, you won’t qualify for a free filing and will need to shell out $29.99 for federal and $24.99 for state. Also, it isn’t available in certain states.

Best for: Taxpayers with simple tax returns who may qualify for a free filing.

Pros

  • Free federal return for eligible simple filers
  • Reasonably priced state filing options
  • User‑friendly step‑by‑step interface

Cons

  • No partial state returns
  • Not robust for complex tax situations
  • Mixed user reports on accuracy and unexpected fees

ezTaxReturn Review: Is it Really Easy?

Affordable DIY tax prep with simple pricing and basic guidance, but it doesn’t support filing in all states.

Our verdict

ezTaxReturn is a budget‑friendly online tax filing service that’s easy to use for basic returns. It stands out for free federal filing and transparent fees, but falls short on complex tax scenarios and advanced tools. Some users report unexpected charges or calculation issues, so double‑check results if your situation isn’t straightforward.

Best for: Basic filers who want straightforward, low‑cost federal and state e‑file options.

Pros

  • Free federal return for eligible simple filers
  • Reasonably priced state filing options
  • User‑friendly step‑by‑step interface

Cons

Who is ezTaxReturn best for?

ezTaxReturn is best for budget‑conscious filers with simple federal and state returns who want an easy, low‑cost online filing option. It’s ideal for straightforward tax situations, but if you need to file a partial state return or live in a state it doesn’t support, you may need to consider other options.

ezTaxReturn filing cost

You could qualify for a free federal tax return with ezTaxReturn if your tax situation fits these boxes:

  • Filing status is Single or Married Filing Jointly
  • No dependents claimed
  • Income only from salary, wages, tips and/or unemployment
  • Only credit claimed is the Earned Income Tax Credit
  • Taxable interest less than $1,500
  • Total income less than $50,000
  • No adjustments to income claimed

The pricing for everyone else and for state filings is as follows:

Federal filing priceState filing priceFeatures
Flat $29.99 (if you don’t meet the criteria to file for free)$24.99
  • Tax prep and e-file
  • 3 years of secure storage
  • 3 years of unlimited downloads
  • Unlimited re-file for rejections
  • “No wait” phone support

You can choose to have your filing fees deducted from your IRS refund via a refund transfer. However, this option incurs a separate refund‑transfer processing fee of around $29.95.

Refund options

If you’re owed a tax refund after filing, ezTaxReturn allows you to receive your refund through:

  • Direct deposit to a bank account (splitting to up to three accounts may be possible).
  • Direct deposit to a prepaid card
  • Paper check by mail

What we like about ezTaxReturn

Overall, ezTaxReturn is great for filers with straightforward federal and state returns, without complex deductions or multiple income streams.

Transparent pricing

ezTaxReturn keeps tax prep simple, making it a solid choice for stress‑free filing. As an IRS trusted partner for the Free File program, it offers reliable, secure preparation and e‑filing.

Federal returns are free for eligible simple filers, while other federal filings cost $29.99 and state filings $24.99. Compared with TurboTax, which can cost around $99 to $309 for federal filings, ezTaxReturn is more budget‑friendly.

ezTaxReturn also gives you free and long-term access. Free federal return downloads are available through May 16, 2026, and it stores your state and federal returns for three years. Printed copies are available for $19.99 through First-Class mail or $34.99 for Overnight.

Filing add-ons

Options services are also a perk. You can get audit defense for $39.99, amended return insurance for $9.99 and current-year amended return filing for $19.99.

Additionally, there’s a $29.95 fee if you choose to pay for your filing through a refund transfer.

Where it falls short

ezTaxReturn’s free federal filing is limited to very basic returns. Filers with dependents, itemized deductions, multiple income sources or higher AGI limits will almost always pay the standard federal fee. In contrast, competitors like FreeTaxUSA or TurboTax often provide broader free filing options.

The platform also lacks advanced features found in larger providers. There’s no W‑2 photo import, limited guidance for complex situations, such as depreciation, investments or self-employment, and fewer integrations than some competitors. Even mid-tier plans from TurboTax or H&R Block include these tools, giving them a clear advantage for more complicated returns.

Customer support can also be inconsistent. Many users report slow or inadequate responses, making it less reliable than competitors with stronger live support.

Not available in all states

ezTaxReturns can not file state returns for Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont or West Virginia.

Customer reviews and ratings

BBB accreditedYes
BBB ratingA+
BBB customer reviews4.27 out of 5 stars, based on 114 customer reviews
Trustpilot score1.8 out of 5 stars, based on 19 customer reviews
Customer reviews verified as of13 January 2026

Compared with many other financial services and tax prep companies, ezTaxReturn earns relatively positive reviews on the Better Business Bureau (BBB). While some users reported unexpected charges, software glitches and limited customer support, many filers praise its straightforward interface and ease of use.

On Trustpilot, ezTaxReturn scores significantly lower, but the small number of reviews makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions. The negative feedback that does exist mostly centers on incorrect tax calculations, unexpected fees and occasional software issues that can make filing frustrating.
