How does Revolut work in Singapore?

Revolut is a digital banking app that allows you to spend in over 150 currencies and exchange up to 28 currencies at minimal cost. It is jammed-packed with advanced banking features, including budgeting tools, instant spending notifications, overseas ATM withdrawals and more.

When you register for a Revolut account, you’ll be able to load funds into your Revolut wallet. Once you’ve done so, you can proceed to order your physical Revolut card or create virtual cards and start using them for your purchases immediately.

There are three account tiers to choose from — Standard, Premium and Metal with each giving you access to more features. In this review, we’ll be discussing the Revolut Standard plan and what it offers.

What features are available with Revolut Standard?

The Revolut Standard account comes with the following features.

  • Transfer money internationally. With Revolut, you can send money in over 150 different currencies, with currency exchange rates pegged to the same rates used within banks. All money transfers are free.
  • Hold multiple currencies. Your Revolut account may also be used as a multi-currency account, allowing you to hold your balance in 28 different currencies.
  • Spending insights. Understand where your money is going with Revolut’s budgeting tools. Revolut will break your spending down by the currency you use, the type of retailer and what type of transaction it was.
  • International payments. Revolut uses Visa to enable payments wherever Visa is accepted, both online and at retail outlets worldwide.
  • Vaults. Revolut makes budgeting much easier with its Vaults feature that allows you to allocate your balance towards different goals. You may also set limits on your monthly spending, ensuring that you don’t exceed your budget.
  • Free worldwide ATM withdrawals. Enjoy no-fee withdrawals up to a monthly limit of $350 per month, after which a 2% fee applies.
  • No-fee currency exchanges. Exchange up to 28 fiat currencies for free, up to a monthly limit of Up to S$9000 per month.

How much does a Revolut Standard account and card cost?

While the Revolut Standard account is free to register and use, there are a few fees to take note of:

  • Card delivery fees. Standard card delivery (up to 9 working days) is free, but it’ll cost S$19.99 for express delivery (approximately 3 to 4 days).
  • Additional card fees. You can add up to 2 additional cards, but they are chargeable at S$9 each.
  • International ATM withdrawal fee. You will be charged a 2% fee if you exceed the free ATM withdrawal limit of $350 per month.
  • Currency conversion markups. 0.5% markup on major currencies.
  • Weekend conversion fees. 1% markup on conversions made over the weekend.
  • Foreign exchange fees. Exchanges of more than S$9,000 a month have a 0.5% fee.

    How do you use Revolut Standard cards abroad?

    Compared to most traditional banks, Revolut does not charge any fees on foreign currency transactions, including with Revolut Standard.

    However, if you are travelling abroad, take note that Standard accounts come with limit Up to S$9000 per month for currency conversion and a $350 per month limit on fee-free foreign currency withdrawals at international ATMs. Beyond that limit, any currency withdrawals worldwide come with a 2% fee.

    Are Revolut cards safe to use?

    Revolut holds a European banking license, regulated by the European Central Bank. In Singapore, Revolut is regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. All Revolut funds in Singapore are held by the Singapore branch of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited. As such, your money is protected in this external account.

    In terms of card safety, Revolut offers plenty of security features to help you protect your card. All Revolut Standard cards may be managed via the Revolut app, where you can freeze and unfreeze your card should anything happen to it. Besides this, you may restrict acceptable spending modes for your card by opting in or out of online payments and contactless payments features.

    What should I look out for?

    • Weekend markup. Watch out for 0.5% markup on major currencies and 1% on exchanges over the weekend.
    • Limited free exchanges and ATM withdrawals. Unlike the paid plans, Revolut Standard imposes the lowest limits for fee-free exchanges and overseas ATM withdrawals.
    • No ATM withdrawals in Singapore. As of September 2020, withdrawals from local ATMs are still not permitted.
    • No priority customer service. Revolut Standard account holders are not entitled to priority support.
    • No travel insurance benefits. You’ll not be covered for baggage delay, loss or damaged items or global medical and dental insurance when you travel.
    • No card personalisation options. There’s only one design available for the Revolut Standard card.

    How do I get a Revolut card in Singapore?

    Download the Revolut app on your smartphone (available on both iOS and Android devices). Launch the app and begin the registration process:

    1. Download the Revolut app.
    2. Open the App and enter your phone number.
    3. Create a password.
    4. Enter the six-digit code you receive.
    5. Enter your first and last name, date of birth and address.
    6. Take a photo of your NRIC (front and back)
    7. Take a selfie
    8. Allow time for verification

    Once verified, deposit at least $20 to your Revolut balance so you can proceed to request for a physical or virtual card.

    Eligibility requirements

    You are eligible for a Revolut card in Singapore as long as you’re above the age of 18.

    Documents required

    All you need is your NRIC or any other valid government ID on hand. Additionally, you will be asked to send a selfie for identity verification purposes.
