The basics

The Green Dot primor® Visa® Gold Secured Credit Card gives consumers with damaged credit the opportunity to build a positive credit history with responsible spending and on-time payments. The card also comes with a low APR as far as secured cards go, but watch out for the many fees that you could incur.

To get this card, you must maintain at least $200 in an interest-bearing savings account, which also acts as a security deposit and a credit limit.

The perks

  • Build your credit.

The card reports to all three major credit bureaus — TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. This makes it easy to build your credit with responsible use and on-time payments.

  • Easy application.

There are no application fees or a credit check, and you can complete the application in minutes.

  • No minimum credit score.

You can apply with a poor credit score or without any credit history.

You’ll also like …

  • Fixed APR.

The card comes with an APR of 9.99% fixed . This is on the lower end, considering the APR for other cards can be up to 26%.

  • Credit limit.

You can deposit from $200 up to $5,000 in a savings account at Green Dot Bank. This amount acts as your credit line, and you can’t use it to make payments. You can increase your credit limit by depositing more funds into your savings account in $50 increments, but you’ll be charged a credit limit increase fee of up to $49.

  • FDIC insured.

Get peace of mind knowing your deposit at Green Dot Bank is FDIC-insured.

What to watch out for

  • Annual fee.

The card comes with an annual fee of $49. Every additional card will cost you $29. When your card is approved, your annual fee and any additional card costs will immediately be applied to your balance.

  • Foreign transaction fee.

Try to refrain from using this card when you travel abroad, as each purchase will cost an additional 3% of the transaction.

  • Other fees.

You’ll pay $29 to get a replacement card; for each expedited payment, you’ll pay $10; to request a stop payment for a cash advance check, you’ll pay $29 fee; to increase your credit limit, you’ll pay a $49 fee; upgrading costs up to $49; and reinstating a card costs $29.

  • Cash advances limit.

The amount of any cash advance you make will be limited to half of your credit line. For example, if your credit line is $200, you can take cash advances of up to $100.

Do I have to pay any fee if I cancel my card early? Or if I pay my balance off early? If yes, what are they?
    Thank you.
