How do credit cards work for couples?

The first choice you need to make is whether you want one account or two. If the answer is two, you’ll apply individually and each person’s card approval will depend on their credit score — although you’re welcome to include your spouse’s income on your application if you manage your finances together.

If you only want one account between the two of you, one person will apply as a primary cardholder and the other will become an authorized cardholder. Authorized cardholders receive their own card and can make purchases — but that’s about it. They typically can’t manage the card or make decisions about rewards. Some cards let you add authorized cardholders for free. Others, like The Platinum Card® from American Express, charge $175 annual fee (Terms apply, see rates & fees) for the first three cards and then $175 annually for each additional card.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: is one account enough for two people? It depends on how you and your partner prefer to manage your finances. Some couples opt for the autonomy of having separate accounts — others enjoy the simplification of combined finances.

Who should be the primary cardholder?

To avoid being declined for a new card, the person with fewer credit card applications is likely the better candidate. Plus, authorized cardholders have the opportunity to boost their credit score by being added to a primary cardholder’s account, so the partner with the strongest credit history may be best off submitting the application.

How do I compare credit cards for couples?

When looking to choose the best credit card for couples, here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Annual fees. As a rule of thumb, the higher the annual fee, the more perks and benefits a card offers. But if cutting expenses is the name of the game, there are numerous no-annual-fee credit cards to choose from, like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.
  • Intro APRs on purchases. Cards with 0% intro APRs on purchases, like the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, are useful for couples with splashy purchases on the horizon, like home renos. The longer the card’s introductory period, the more time you have to pay down your balance without accruing interest.
  • Balance transfer APRs. Cards that offer 0% intro APR on balance transfers are better suited to couples tackling debt — specifically credit card debt. These cards allow you to shift an outstanding balance from an existing card to your new card and you won’t be charged interest for the length of the intro period.
  • Welcome bonus. Many cards offer signup bonuses and welcome offers — some in the form of rewards points, others in the form of cold, hard cash. Before you apply, read the fine print and make sure you can meet any eligibility requirements for the welcome bonus — typically a minimum amount of spending within the first few months of having the card.
  • Date night rewards. If you and your partner enjoy regular evenings out, consider a card that offers high reward rates for dining and entertainment, like the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card.
  • Travel rewards. Numerous cards offer premium rewards for jet-setting and road-tripping couples, so keep your eyes peeled for points and cash back on fuel, airfare and hotel spending. You may even be able to nab exclusive perks like flight companion tickets — but you may need to opt for an airline credit card to receive this reward.
  • Free authorized users. Some credit cards let you add authorized users to your account for free. Others, like The Platinum Card® from American Express, charge a fee.

Bottom line

Couples have excellent credit card options to choose from. You can get a card with rewards on travel, gas, dining and entertainment or you can earn rewards on groceries and streaming services. You may also want to consider the top credit cards for families as these cards offer rewards in areas you might commonly spend on.

But if you don’t think any of the cards above will work for your situation, compare other credit card options.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth becoming an authorized user?
In most cases, it is. If the main cardholder pays off the card balance on time, the authorized user can piggyback and get a boost on their credit score.

The authorized user can also earn reward points on their spending, which will accrue on the main cardholder’s account.
