OVO Energy | Electricity, gas and dual fuel tariffs
Our review of OVO Energy sets out its gas and electricity tariffs, green credentials, and pros and cons.
★★★★★
OVO Energy has grown steadily to become the third largest energy supplier in the UK, after British Gas and E.ON. In 2020, the Bristol-based supplier acquired the domestic energy division of former “Big Six” competitor SSE. As a result, OVO now supplies over 5 million households.
The firm says it is “on a journey to carbon zero” with its customers and announced in October 2020 that it was moving from around 50% to 100% renewable electricity as standard. It is also making strides towards supplying fully carbon-neutral gas. We’ve covered its supply sources in our review – the latest official figures don’t reflect this switch yet.

Is OVO Energy green?
According to the latest data collected from OVO Energy by the industry regulator Ofgem, the supplier sourced its energy from the following sources during the year to March 2020. OVO announced later that year that it had switched to 100% renewable electricity.
OVO Energy customer reviews
According to data compiled by the charity Citizens Advice, OVO Energy saw an average of 26.1 complaints per 10,000 customers escalated to a third party in 2020, including the Energy Ombudsman, a dispute resolution organisation recognised by the energy industry. This was slightly below average performance compared to the industry as a whole last year.
However, customer reviews on the website Trustpilot give OVO Energy 4.3 stars out of 5, based on over 48,000 reviews. The number of customers giving the supplier an “excellent” rating stands at a whopping 71%, with a further 15% of customers giving a rating of “great”. This compares favourably with 8% of customers who gave the firm a “bad” rating (last updated: August 2021).
Pros and cons of OVO Energy
Pros
- 100% renewable electricity.
- Smart technology. The firm also sells smart thermostats and home electric vehicle chargers.
Cons
- Poor customer response times. Data from Citizens Advice shows that customers experienced long wait times when trying to contact an OVO Energy customer service agent in 2020.
Our verdict: Is OVO Energy any good?
The signs are that OVO Energy customers are, broadly speaking, pretty happy with the service they get from their green energy supplier. This is despite slightly disappointing data from Citizens Advice around the time it takes to get a response to customer service enquiries and the proportion of complaints that the firm can’t solve itself.
The firm’s tariffs are usually pretty competitive, if not necessarily always the cheapest.
However, as a large supplier that offers its customers the ability to manage their accounts (and sometimes their home heating) from the palm of their hand, OVO may be a popular choice for tech-savvy households wanting to limit their impact on the environment.
