Our verdict
Cash App is a mobile peer-to-peer payment service that allows fast transfers with a linked debit card or account.
Cash App makes peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers simple and is ideal for quick, casual payments like paying friends and splitting dinners. Optional features include direct deposit, investing and a debit card that earns limited cash back. It's free to use, but instant transfers and ATM withdrawals without the qualifying deposits can add additional costs. And if you want higher savings rates and more cashback rewards, you can get Green status, which requires $500 in spending with your card or direct deposits of at least $300 per month.
Best for: Those who want fast P2P payments and debit card access.

What we like about Cash App
With no monthly fees or minimum balances, Cash App is a low-cost, flexible option for everyday money management and casual payments.
Quick P2P payments
Cash App stands out for its instant, fee-free mobile peer-to-peer transfers. Whether you need to split a dinner bill, pay a friend or send cash for a group trip, Cash App makes it easy on its user-friendly platform.
You can link external bank accounts and debit cards to send instant payments to added friends with no fees. If you’re sent cash, you can wait a few days to transfer the amount to your linked account for free, or pay an instant transfer fee of 0.5% and 1.75% (minimum of $0.25).
Optional debit card
The Cash App card can use your Cash App balance for spending, or you can load it in the app with your linked external account.
The card itself is also customizable, where you can choose between a collection of “stamps” to add to your card, draw your own custom design and choose a variety of background colors, with varying prices for different colors and designs. You can also upgrade your Cash App card from plastic to metal for a $50 fee.
On top of that, the card offers rotating “Boosts” at select stores, which are discounts or cash back deals that you can activate in the app.
Cash App Green status with debit card
Cash App now offers a second “tier” if you have the Cash App card. To get Cash App Green status, you either need to spend $500 per month with your card, or direct deposit at least $300 per month.
The differences between a regular card holder and a Green status card holder are:
| Regular Cash App cardholder | Green Status |
|---|---|
|
|
Important note: sending money with the P2P feature does not count toward the $500 purchase requirement.
Budgeting, savings and investing
Beyond payments, Cash App doubles as a light budgeting tool, allowing you to set up a savings account and direct deposits or even dip into stock or cryptocurrency investing.
The savings account offers up to 3.5% on your balance if you have Green status ($500 in spending or $300 in direct deposits per month). Other savings tools include round-ups, paycheck distributions and custom savings goals.
Additionally, Cash App offers a kids’ card option, with an adult sponsor who already has a Cash App account. The Cash App teen account is for ages 13 and up, letting teens get a debit card, but it has supervision and guardrails.
Where it falls short
While basic transfers are free, moving money instantly to your bank can add up over time. Cash App applies a 3% fee for credit card payments and charges 0.5% to 1.75% (minimum $0.25) for instant bank transfers. You can avoid most fees by using the standard, slower transfer option and steering clear of credit card payments.
There are ATM fees, but those get waived if you’re a Green status cardholder.
Many customer complaints
Cash App has a lot of negative customer feedback, and many users describe customer support as slow or difficult to reach. Some customers report app glitches or crashes, which can create delays or confusion when sending money on the go.

How we picked theseWhat is the Finder Score?
The Finder Score crunches over 300 checking accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's monthly fees, overdraft fees, opening deposit, customer support options, ATM network and features — this gives you a simple score out of 10.
To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of checking accounts against what we consider is the best option: no monthly fees, no overdraft fees, a large ATM network of 50,000 or more, additional features outside of typical banking services, and the optional perk of earning interest. Accounts that are nearly free to maintain and use are scored the highest, while accounts with costly fees and few features are scored the lowest.

Cash App is owned by Block, Inc. (formerly Square) and is a major fintech app, ranking the #2 most downloaded in the Apple App Store and #1 “top free in finance” on the Google Play Store.
Cash App is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and scores a B+ rating. However, the app gets poor customer ratings, with users noting issues of poor customer service, as well as the sudden and unexpected closure of users’ accounts. The ease of use of Cash App makes it a target platform for fraud, so it’s common to see account closures if suspected of fraud.
However, the reviews are overwhelmingly positive on Trustpilot and the app stores. Most users state they have had a great experience with the app, and they love the app’s user-friendly design and speedy function, saying it’s an easy app to send cash to friends and family.

I have a Cash app and my card is enabled. What do I do in order to use my card? I don’t want to add my bank account on it.

Hi Victoria,
Thanks for contacting Finder. I hope you are well.
Your Cash App account comes with a Visa debit card — called a Cash Card — that you can use to pay for goods and services in the US from your Cash App balance without involving your bank account or personal credit card. Your Cash Card may be used to make purchases with a merchant using any available amounts in your Cash App Balance. Upon activating the Service, you instruct Square to use the available funds in your Cash App Balance to load your Cash Card for making purchases with your Cash Card and to transfer the funds from your Cash App Balance to your Cash Card upon receipt of funds into your Cash App Balance.
Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.
Best,
Nikki

Hi Tracy,
Thanks for your comment and I hope you are doing well.
One wat to add cash to your Cash App balance is to do a direct deposit. Please see the steps below:
1. Tap the Balance tab on your Cash App home screen.
2. Press Add Cash.
3. Choose an amount.
4. Tap Add.
5. Use Touch ID or enter your PIN to confirm.
You can use Walmart to deposit into Cash App and add anywhere from $20 to $1100 at one time. Simply visit a Walmart store and they’d be able to help you out on the transaction.
Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.
Best,
Nikki
