Cryptovoxels is a play-to-earn metaverse game, heavily focused on socialization with other players, exploring player-built environments and creating unique digital assets. Playable on browser and Android devices, it’s easy to start and free to explore the world — but investing in virtual real estate requires some cash.

To unlock the play-to-earn features, you need a compatible Web3 wallet. Mint an avatar, username or digital collectibles and buy and sell virtual real estate. However, a wallet isn’t required to enter the game if you just want to explore and chat with other players.

It’s an expansive game with many features to cover, so strap in.

Highlights:

  • Free to enter
  • VR capabilities
  • Editing and building tools built in
  • Playable on browser and Android devices
  • Compatible with four Web3 wallets

What is Cryptovoxels?

Cryptovoxels is a metaverse game built on the Ethereum blockchain. It was inspired by the novels Snowcrash and Ready Player One — fictional virtual realities built for collecting, gaming and socializing that act as extensions of the real world.

Other metaverse blockchain games like Upland, The Sandbox and Decentraland share similarities with Cryptovoxels. The underlying concept of these games is creating a decentralized player-driven economy where players determine the future of the metaverse, hinging on player engagement, community and digital asset creation.

Cryptovoxels takes place in Origin City, and the land is owned by players. Landowners can build on their land and add unique features such as audio and images.

Some players may even offer their land for free for community development, called a “sandbox parcel.” Additionally, editing tools, avatar creation and chat are built into the game.

Cryptovoxels doesn’t have a native currency, unlike the majority of other metaverse games we’ve seen. Cryptovoxels once had the native currency COLR, but it’s now a dead token. Users need Ether (ETH) to buy land, items and cover gas fees for interacting with the Ethereum blockchain.

Cryptovoxels was developed by Nolan Consulting, an independent game developer based in New Zealand. The founder of Nolan Consulting, Ben Nolan, specializes in software development.

Playing Cryptovoxels

Entering Cryptovoxels is simple, and if you just want to explore, it only requires a web browser.

Cryptovoxels can be played on most JavaScript-enabled web browsers, including Firefox and Chrome. You control the game’s characters using a mouse and keyboard, and it’s compatible with VR gear such as Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Go to Cryptovoxels.com, select Play Now and you’re immediately loaded into the game with a random avatar and random username. No need to connect a wallet or create an account.

Each time you enter the metaverse without an account, your username and avatar are randomly generated. Chat with other players and start exploring immediately, which is great for users that want to test out the game before investing.

From the main page, players have the option to create a Free Space. Spaces are isolated pieces of land that are not connected to the Cryptovoxels world. This means there are no neighbors and no friends to play with.

However, you can share a URL to your space that friends can use to access it. Friends with land can also add a teleport link on their grid that leads to your parcel.

To unlock play-to-earn features, such as creating a unique username, buying and selling collectibles or purchasing land, you need a crypto wallet. Usernames and avatars in Cryptovoxels are ERC-721 tokens. Follow these steps to access the features:

  1. Select Sign in on the top-right corner.
  2. Choose a crypto wallet to sign in with: MetaMask, WalletConnect, Coinbase or Facebook (via Torus). For help on setting up your MetaMask wallet, check out our MetaMask guide.
  3. Select Avatar on the main navigation bar to create a username.
  4. Complete the field Register name to create your custom username. There’s a gas fee to complete this transaction, around 0.002024 ETH at the time of writing. Once processed, you’ll see the username next to Names.
  5. Select the name you registered and start playing.

Once you’re signed in, you can explore and start collecting digital assets, buying land and socializing with other players. Manage your digital assets by accessing your account and equipping your avatar with your owned wearables.

How to earn within Cryptovoxels

The primary way to earn in Cryptovoxels is by buying and selling land or creating digital collectibles and selling them on the market. Players can build stores, art galleries, mazes and more after buying a parcel, called a Cryptovoxels Parcel (CVPA), an ERC-721 token.

Players can also create NFT museums where other players can purchase the art on display. While viewing an NFT that’s for sale, you can select it in-game and be directed to the OpenSea market. Cryptovoxels’ marketplace is managed by OpenSea, one of the oldest and largest NFT marketplaces in the world.

You could try your hand at creating avatar wearables like hats, shirts, pants, watches, necklaces and more to be sold in-game via your own storefront, or just list it for sale on the Cryptovoxels market.

What are Cryptovoxels NFTs?

The CVPA, the virtual parcels, are ERC-721 tokens. They’re tradeable in the metaverse and the OpenSea NFT marketplace. There’s a limit of 5,919 parcels, much less than Decentraland (90,601) and The Sandbox (166,464 parcels).

Avatars, wearables and usernames are also ERC-721 tokens, tradable on the marketplace.

How to get NFTs on Cryptovoxels

While visiting Cryptovoxels.com, select Buy Parcels to participate in a primary land sale, which happens every week. There’s a link on the Cryptovoxels’ site that redirects you to OpenSea’s Cryptovoxel secondary land sales.

Buy NFTs while exploring the game or accessing the Marketplace and sorting by collectibles, collections and parcels.

How to create and sell NFTs from Cryptovoxels

Access the Marketplace and list your owned digital assets for sale, either on Cryptovoxels.com or on OpenSea. Remember that you need a crypto wallet to buy or sell NFTs.

Also, you can create your own digital assets to sell using MagicaVoxel, which requires a download — link accessible in the Cryptovoxels Wiki. There may be a learning curve on creating your own assets, but the Wiki offers guidance on how to create and sell digital assets.

Players can earn royalties on their sold NFTs. After you’ve created a collection — managed by OpenSea — you have the option to set your own royalty percentage, up to 10% and input your payout wallet address.

Unique features

Cryptovoxels gives players the freedom to customize their gameplay or explore without an account. Many gamers are hesitant of blockchain games, but Cryptovoxels invites players in without any commitment or investment and no download — you just need a browser.

Other unique features include:

  • Host concerts with DJs
  • Create art galleries and sell NFTs in real time
  • Create assets and earn royalties from secondary sales (up to 10%)
  • Enhance gameplay with VR gear
  • Build mazes, homes or trippy environments for players to explore
  • Use a portal to jump to a specific event or space immediately

Another unique feature is the lack of native currency. This means players won’t need to swap tokens to get the in-game currency because you just need ETH.

Cryptovoxels roadmap

There are a lot of updates planned for Cryptovoxels, all noted in the official roadmap.

A few notable plans include:

  • An ERC-721 and ERC-1155 marketplace that supports Ethereum and Polygon and will allow players to buy and sell parcels, wearables and other NFTs using ETH or MATIC.
  • Batch transfers of NFTs to multiple players.
  • Architect island; an island of parcels where the outside is not editable.
  • Ability to have private conversations with other players.
  • A third-party NFT renting program.
  • Ability to lock certain players out of parcels (blocking).
  • Ability to add “friends,” aka friends list.

Bottom line

Cryptovoxels is an expansive, player-owned world. You’re given the ability to customize your space, avatar and experience in a way that fits your taste. Plus, players have the option to earn in the game, either by creating a storefront, curating museums or building NFT assets.

If you’re still iffy on Cryptovoxels, you can take a peek around the game without any commitment.
