Discover makes canceling your card easy, but be prepared to stand your ground.

Card issuers will almost always try to keep you as their customer. This often involves making it hard for you to cancel your card without talking to a representative over the phone or in person. When you talk to someone, they could offer you a better deal and will try to convince you to stay.

Despite that, Discover cards are relatively easy to cancel — though you can’t do it without calling. If you’re determined to close your account, be prepared to stand your ground and decline their offers.

Looking for a new card?

When one door closes, sometimes another one opens. Getting another card might have a positive impact on your credit score if you increase your credit limit. It’s always best to consider your financial situation and look for a card that can add value to your wallet before you apply.

What steps should I take before canceling my Discover credit card?

  1. Pay off your balance. When you cancel your Discover credit card, your outstanding balance will remain. It’s always best to pay off your debt before canceling a card, but Discover will let you pay off your debt even if the card is closed.
  2. Redeem your rewards. Make sure you redeem your rewards before closing your card. If you don’t, Discover will credit your account with your reward balance.
  3. Contact customer service. Call 800-DISCOVER (347-2683) to close your account.

How do I cancel my Discover credit card?

Once you call and let the bank know you want to close your account, they’ll likely ask for a reason. This is to gauge what to offer you in order to get you to stay. Let’s say you tell them the APR is too high for your taste. In this case, they could offer you a lower APR or an interest-free period.

This can be a good bargaining chip that could land you better conditions than you already have with other cards. In this case, you might consider closing another card and keeping your Discover credit card.

However, if you’re completely set on closing your account, turn down the offers and make sure you have the following nearby:

  • Your credit card and account information.
  • Reason for canceling the card — you can provide any reason you like.
  • Pen and paper to take down the representative’s ID and name in case you need it later.

Once you’ve gathered everything, call 800-DISCOVER (347-2683).

Will canceling my Discover credit card affect my credit score?

In some cases, closing your Discover card will affect your credit score. Especially if you owned the card for a long time and had a large credit line.

If you’re applying for a loan or if you’re considering applying in the near future, you might want to wait for the loan to be approved before canceling your Discover credit card. That way, you’ll avoid getting poor loan terms from a slight credit score decline that could happen when you close your card.

But if you have a good credit score and low utilization levels, closing your card could have minimal impact.

What should I do after canceling my Discover credit card?

It’s always good to know for certain that your account is closed. To that end, consider writing a cancelation letter to Discover. This should include:

  • Your name and address.
  • Credit card number.
  • Date of cancelation and the name and ID of the representative you talked to.
  • Request for an account closure confirmation letter.

You can send your letter to:

Customer Service – General Inquiries
Discover Financial Services
P.O. Box 30943
Salt Lake City, UT, 84130-0943.

So you’ve closed your Discover card. Now what? Consider an alternative replacement and compare your credit card options to find the best you’re eligible for.
