TheFuelman Commercial Advantage Fleet Card is a closed-loop card for mixed fleets. While it allows the chance at a high rebate on unleaded and diesel fuel, fees can easily wipe out your savings. Watch out for a steep program administration fee of up to 10 cents per gallon or $2 per transaction, as well as a monthly fee of up to $10 per card.

Unfortunately, FLEETCOR — the card issuer — discloses fuel minimums required for volume rebates only after you’re approved for the card. And because of its numerous fees, the card isn’t the best choice for savings. Rather, it’s a better option for its purchase controls and detailed transaction reporting.

Card benefits

  • Save up to 10 cents per gallon when you buy unleaded diesel fuel.
You can earn rebates based on how much fuel you purchase, but you won’t know your purchase minimums until you’ve been approved for the card. For reference, the Public Sector Fleetcard — also offered by FLEETCOR — offers a 5-cent-per-gallon rebate when you purchase 3,001 to 14,000 monthly gallons of fuel.
  • Save more in the first year.
Save up to 2 cents a gallon when you buy fuel in the Fuelman Network. After a year, Fuelman re-evaluates your accounts and could change your reward rate.
  • Card purchasing controls.
Set purchase limits by merchant category code, max number of transactions per time period, dollar amount and certain times and dates. You can also require driver IDs, vehicle IDs and odometer readings before fueling.
  • Fraud monitoring.
If there’s an unusual transaction on one of the fleet cards, you’ll receive an alert by text and email. You can also monitor activity on cards in real-time online.

Which brands are in the Fuelman Network?

On the Fuelman website, you can check whether locations near you accept your card. Here are a few major brands listed on the Fuelman website:

  • Never go alone
  • AAMCO
  • Arco
  • BP
  • Chevron
  • Circle K
  • Conoco
  • Exxon
  • Firestone
  • Flying J
  • Jiffy Lube
  • Loves
  • Meineke
  • Midas
  • Murphy USA
  • Shell
  • Sinclair
  • Sunoco
  • TA
  • Texaco
  • Valero
  • Walmart

What to watch out for

  • Rebates exclude some purchases.
You won’t get rebates on aviation spending, bulk fuel, international fuel and spending at gas stations outside of the network.
  • Not a revolving credit account.
Pay your entire balance after each billing cycle. Otherwise your balance will attract interest at a 32% variable APR.
  • Your account may require a deposit.
Depending on your credit, you may be required to provide a security deposit. Your credit line will be 80% of your security deposit.
  • Fees.
Watch out for fees that can eat into your rebates, including special-network fees, card fees and other administration fees.

How to apply for the Fuelman Commercial Advantage Fleet Card

  1. Go to the Fuelman website and click Apply now.
  2. Enter business information such as your number of vehicles, contact information and annual income.
  3. Review your application and submit it.

What credit score do I need?

A fair credit score of 580 may be sufficient to qualify for this card. However, approval is ultimately Fleetcor’s decision, and you have better chances with a high credit score.

Bottom line

This card can offer high rebates depending on your fuel purchase volume, but it’s severely hampered by steep fees. Most notably, you’ll want to watch out for the administrative fee of up to 10 cents per gallon or $2 per transaction.

If you’re not sure if a fleet card is right for you, consider a small-business gas card.
