Do I really need a restaurant and food delivery credit card?

There are many excellent restaurant and food delivery credit cards to choose from. But in the end, you might find another card type suits you better.

Consider avoiding a restaurant and food delivery card if:

  • You really don’t spend much at restaurants. It might feel great to get a trove of rewards for a restaurant bill here and there, but think about how often you actually eat out. You might discover that you spend much more in other categories. If that’s the case, it might make sense to pick up a different card type.
  • Another card offers a better combination of accelerated rewards. Restaurant and food delivery cards usually pair accelerated dining rewards with bonus rewards in other categories. But certain bonus categories — such as groceries — are under represented. If you find the bulk of your spending lies elsewhere, a restaurant and food delivery card might not be best for you.

How to make the most of your restaurant credit card

  • Earn the signup bonus.
If your card has a signup bonus, check the spend requirement and plan how you’ll reach it. There are certain hacks to reach your spend requirement more easily.
  • Spend in bonus categories.
Your card will offer accelerated rewards at restaurants, so use it whenever you dine out or order to go. In addition, the card may offer bonus rewards in other categories. Wherever your card doesn’t offer accelerated cash back, points or miles, consider using a flat-rate cashback card.

Pro tip: How to earn rewards when dining out with friends

Now that you have a dining credit card, look to use it at restaurants everywhere. The next time you eat out with friends, cover the bill with your card and ask them to pay you back. That big bill can turn into a trove of points or cash back.

  • Take advantage of the intro APR.
If your card has an intro APR, you have an opportunity to spend strategically and save on interest. You may want to transfer high-interest balances to take advantage of your 0% APR. And if you’re careful about not going overboard, you may be able to make certain purchases and pay them off over time with zero interest.
  • Leverage your card’s other benefits.
Check if your card offers spending credits, transfers to airline or hotel partners, or other benefits.

Earn bonus rewards for food delivery

Most of the credit cards above aren’t only good picks for dining at restaurants. They also offer bonus rewards for food delivery, which can help just a bit if you’re stuck at home.

Be aware that some card issuers don’t explicitly mention that food delivery apps earn bonus rewards, though you may earn these rewards regardless. If you’re unsure, consider ordering directly from a restaurant that delivers.

Bottom line

Restaurant credit cards can help you earn rewards on your dining purchases. But the best of these cards will offer additional perks such as an intro APR period, a solid signup bonus, no annual fee and more.

However, if you’re not sure whether these cards are what you’re looking for, check out other rewards credit cards and compare your options.
