The Comdata Construction Card is an open-loop Mastercard product designed for contractors. It offers volume rebates of $0.005 to $0.03 per gallon, starting at 1,999 monthly gallons purchased. If you open an account before the end of 2019, you’ll save an additional 6 cents per gallon of fuel on up to 3,000 monthly gallons during your first six months after account opening.

While the non-promotional rebates aren’t particularly impressive, they’re complemented by the other savings you’ll receive. You’ll save 5% on maintenance purchases at participating Tires Plus and Firestone locations, as well as 2% at supply retailers such as Lowe’s, Home Depot and HD Supply.

Card benefits

  • Card controls.
Designate spending limits on your account’s cards. For example, set limits by gallons purchased. You can also limit purchase types, such as setting fuel-only rules.
  • Make fuel and maintenance purchases.
The card is an open-loop, Mastercard-branded product, meaning you can use it virtually anywhere credit cards are accepted. There are over 160,000 fuel locations and 400,000 maintenance locations backed by Comdata.
  • Earn rebates.
You can earn up to 3 cents per gallon in rebates depending on the volume of fuel purchased. As of November 2019, the volume rebates are as follows: $0.005 for 1,999 or fewer gallons; $0.01 for 2,000 to 4,999 gallons; $0.015 for 5,000 to 9,999 gallons; $0.02 for 10,000 to 19,999 gallons; $0.025 for 20,000 to 29,999 gallons; and $0.03 for 30,000 or more gallons.
  • Earn rewards.
Earn 2% cash back when you buy supplies at eligible retailers, including Home Depot, Lowes, Menards and HD Supply. Purchases at department stores, warehouse clubs or supercenters aren’t eligible.Earn 1% cash back on all non-fuel spending.
  • Savings at Firestone and Tires Plus.
Save 5% at these locations through the Mastercard Easy Savings Network.
  • Monitor spending.
See detailed transaction information and make changes to your account online. Set purchase controls to allow certain types of spending only.

What to watch out for

  • Limitations on rebates and rewards.
You won’t earn rebates or rewards on aviation, propane, bulk fuel or natural gas spending. Also, you’ll earn volume rebates only at Level 3 sites. These are locations that process Level 3 data — granular information such as driver IDs, vehicle IDs and odometer readings.

What credit score do I need?

You may be approved for this card if you have at least a fair credit score of 580. Consider your financial situation before applying, and know that approval is never guaranteed.

    Bottom line

This card offers solid rewards if you’re a contractor. Unfortunately, Fleetcor and Regions Bank don’t disclose fuel minimums for rebates upfront. Also, card and administrative fees can eat into your rewards.

If you’re unsure about fleet cards, consider a small-business gas card instead.
