How to choose the best credit card for Uber and Lyft
When choosing a card with perks and features for your Uber or Lyft purchases, look for:
Accelerated rewards on rideshares. To earn points or cash back on your Uber or Lyft purchases, look for a card that includes rideshares as an accelerated rewards category. Rideshares are sometimes hidden under travel or ground transportation categories. If you can’t find such a category, look for limousines. Note that while taxis do accept credit cards, they don’t necessarily count as rideshares.
Any of the cards above could be excellent options for frequent ridesharing users. But there are some alternatives you could consider, such as:
An Amazon credit card. This may seem strange, but an Amazon credit card with a 5% cash back on Amazon purchases could be one of the most rewarding options. Here’s how it works: you buy Uber gift cards on Amazon and earn the 5% back on your purchases. This is one of the highest rewards rates you can get on Uber purchases.
Flat rewards-rate card. A credit card with flat rewards on all purchases can be a decent alternative. For example, the Citi Double Cash card earns an unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases — 1% back when you make the purchase and an additional 1% back when you pay it off. And you get to earn the same 2% back on everything else, such as groceries, gas, dining, home improvements and travel. The difference between this card and another card with 3% back on rideshares is that you earn $10 less for every $1,000 spent on this category.
What you need to know about the Capital One Uber partnership
In 2015, Capital One introduced to cardholders special benefits and discounts on their Uber rides. But in April 2017, it ended this promotional offer. Today, if you use your Capital One credit card to pay for Uber rides, you won’t earn exclusive extras.
If you frequently hail Uber and Lyft, a credit card with accelerated rewards on rideshares can help you earn cash and perks on your rides. Your options include several credit cards that offer points for rideshares and one ultimate travel card with annual Uber credits and Uber gift card redemption options.
However, if you find that none of these cards are appealing enough to your financial situation, check out other credit cards and compare your options.
