Imagine if you could have a balance transfer card and a rewards card all in one. Fortunately, this exists.

A balance transfer card that comes with rewards means you can pay down your debt at a lower interest rate. Then, after you’ve paid off your debt, you can earn points on purchases to reward your spending. Some cards even offer added travel and purchase benefits.

While these cards sound like a win-win, you may want to consider some factors before submitting your application.

When comparing balance transfer and rewards credit cards, we looked at factors such as balance transfer fees, introductory APRs for balance transfers, annual fees, reward earning categories, points earned per dollar spent, point redemption value, signup bonuses, annual rewards bonuses and other features a cardholder might consider. The cards that stood out above the others in one or several of these factors were selected for highlight.

How to choose the best balance transfer credit cards with rewards

With all the credit card options at your disposal, consider the following to make the right choice:

  • Length of intro APR period. You can pay off your debt with lower monthly payments by choosing the card with the longest 0% intro APR period on balance transfers. In this case, that’s the Citi Double Cash card. For example, for a $5,000 balance transfer, a card with 15 months of intro APR period will require monthly payments of around $333. With the Citi Double Cash card, the same amount of transfer will require monthly payments of around $277. That’s $55 less each month.
  • Balance transfer fees. Another way to save money on balance transfers is to pay lower fees. All three cards, except the Citi card, have a 3% balance transfer fee. The Citi Double Cash card has a 5% balance transfer fee, meaning a $5,000 balance transfer will cost you $250 with the Citi card and $150 with the other cards.
  • Rewards. If all things are equal regarding the balance transfer length and costs, consider where you spend most and which one of these cards will help you maximize your rewards after you pay off your balance transfer.

Can you get rewards on a balance transfer?

In most cases, no. At the time of this writing, there are only a few Barclaycard balance transfer cards that offer rewards points on transferred debt.

Alternatives to balance transfer credit cards with rewards

The main advantage to this type of card is that it offers reward value after the 0% intro APR period has passed. But depending on your debt, you may want to consider these alternatives:

  • Longer intro APR period. For larger debts where you may need a longer interest-free period to pay it off, consider these two cards: Citi Diamond Preferred or the Citi Simplicity. Both cards offer the longest intro APR period, but they don’t have any rewards.
  • No balance transfer fees. Most credit cards have a balance transfer fee of either 3% or 5%. This makes a $5,000 balance transfer cost $150 or $250. To avoid this, consider a card with temporary or ongoing no balance transfer fees.
