Wally

Wally is a budgeting app that can help you keep track of your bank accounts, cards and expenses – so that you know exactly how much you can afford to spend on that shopping spree you’re planning for next week.

What’s Wally?

It launched in 2014 and is now available in 22 different countries. India, the US and China are the countries where it’s most popular, but you can use it in the UK too.

How does Wally work?

You can sync your bank accounts with Wally, allowing you to keep track of all your finances in one place. You can check your real-time balances and generate monthly spending insights, both for past transaction and future forecasts.

Here’s what you can do with Wally:

  • Sync all your accounts. You can connect to your current accounts, savings accounts, credits cards and loans, and check your latest balances, all using open banking technology.
  • Add in cash receipts. You can also scan and upload any physical receipts that you want to add.
  • Create groups to manage joint accounts. If you have a joint account with your partner and you both have Wally, you can both add payments to it and see its new balance.
  • Set a daily budget and a savings target. Wally will automatically tell you how much you have left to spend while the day progresses, and also how much you need to put aside to pay for that holiday you want to book next month.
  • Get spending insights. You can organise your payments into categories, places and tags, and Wally will calculate how much you’ve spent on each and illustrate this using graphs and charts.
  • Split payments with your friends. And keep track of them – your friend won’t be able to say he “forgot” he owed you that 20 quid anymore.

How much does Wally cost?

For the basic version, Wally is free to download and use. There’s also a Wally Gold option, which costs $39.99 (£33) a year or $8.99 (£7.50) a month, and adds a series of extra features, such as a currency converter, custom budgets and categories, and downloadable spreadsheets containing your transactions. You can also make a one-off payment of $74.99 (£62) which gives you access to Wally Gold for life.

Is Wally safe?

You can set a password to protect the app, all data is encrypted and Wally says it never sells it to third parties.

Bottom line

There are some very advanced budgeting apps in the UK market plus digital current accounts such as Monzo and Starling also offer some of their own budgeting tools.

But for a free-to-use app, Wally has a decent range of budgeting features that allow you to monitor your spending on a daily basis, set savings goals and generate categorised spending insights. You can also connect to your current accounts, savings accounts, credit cards and loans, giving you a comprehensive overview of your finances and real-time balances.
