Our verdict

A basic checking account with a $150 signup bonus but watch out for monthly fees.

The TD Convenience Checking account may be particularly attractive to students and new account holders — there’s no monthly fee for those aged 17 to 23 or if you can hold a daily balance of $100 or more. It’s especially advantageous for those who travel in North America because you can access TD Bank ATMs throughout the Eastern US and Canada. Plus, there are no foreign transaction fees.

But unlike other student checking accounts, you won’t earn interest on your balance and TD Bank won’t reimburse you for your out-of-network ATM fees.

Pros

  • No minimum opening deposit
  • TD rate discounts
  • 24/7 customer service
  • Signup bonus

Cons

  • $15 maintenance fee
  • $1 paper statements
  • Limited coverage
