Do I need Shopify Plus?

In addition to Shopify Plus, Shopify offers four lower-level plans. One is a micro plan called Shopify Lite. The other three are standard plans called Basic Shopify, Shopify and Advanced Shopify.

A few big differences between the plans are:

Differences between the plansDescription
Credit card ratesThe higher-level plan you pick, the less you pay in credit card transaction fees.
Transaction feesIf you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, you’ll pay a transaction fee per sale. This fee decreases with higher-level plans.
Staff accountsYou can give additional staff members access to your website and store.
Shipping label discountYou’ll get steeper discounts for shipping with higher-level plans.

With Shopify Plus, you may save in credit card and transaction fees depending on your sales volume. (Your exact rates will vary depending on the size of your business.) The additional savings on shipping may also be worthwhile.

Logistically, you may need many staff accounts, an advanced report builder or real-time carrier shipping. Consider all of these factors when deciding whether to sign up for Shopify Plus.

Shopify E-commerce review

Shopify Plus starts at $2,000 a month. The actual price can vary, however, depending on the size of your business and additional features you might need — such as infrastructure to handle specific traffic levels.

Payment gateways

Shopify supports more than 70 payment gateways, including:

  • PayPal
  • Stripe
  • Amazon Payments
  • BitPay
  • QuickBooks Payments
  • Worldpay
  • NETbilling

If you use Shopify Payments, you won’t be charged transaction fees on top of your credit card fees. However, you may be charged transaction fees if you use a third-party gateway (the exact amount varies depending on the size of your business).

Store hosting

Shopify offers scalable hosting and unlimited bandwidth, which means it can keep your website running regardless of how much traffic you receive. According to Shopify, you’ll also have 99.99% site uptime.

Customer service

As a Shopify customer, you can always use Shopify’s online Help Center, which includes support categories like:

  • PayPal
  • Intro to Shopify
  • Your account
  • Migrating to Shopify
  • Selling online
  • QuickBooks Payments
  • Using themes
  • Payments
  • Domains

You can also contact Shopify 24/7 via online chat, email or phone. Since you’re an enterprise customer, your support requests will receive priority service.

A nice bonus to being a Shopify Plus client is that you get a Merchant Success Manager dedicated to your account. This person helps you set up technical elements of your website, such as custom app features, SSL certificates and design modifications. Your Merchant Success Manager can also help you migrate your current e-commerce store to Shopify.

What other products will I need?

Running an enterprise-level business requires a lot of moving parts to work seamlessly together. While Shopify Plus can handle a lot of your business’ functions, you’ll need a few other providers as well.

  • Business checking account. If you don’t already have one, you’ll likely need a dedicated business bank account so that you can keep your personal and business funds separate.
  • Payroll processor. If you have employees, you may want to consider signing up with a full-service payroll processor like Paychex to help you handle payroll, taxes, HR, W-2s and 1099s.
  • Business insurance. As your business grows, you may need to expand your insurance to include liability protection, coverage for any warehouses and coverage for employees on your premises.

Bottom line

If you’re a high-volume seller, Shopify Plus can help you run your e-commerce store. But if you run a small business or are just getting started, you’ll want to compare other e-commerce platforms.
