The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been going tit for tat in a race to be the number one console this generation, but Sony may have the edge where it counts – the games.
Some people think of gamers as geeks, but what then would that make us; we went through every item for sale on the Western PlayStation 4 and Xbox One stores and collated all the information. We’ve been combing through it and reporting on our findings as they emerge ever since, and we invite you to take a look at some of the articles listed below for some interesting facts and figures about this generation of gaming thus far. Today, we’re going head-to-head on a critical component – the software.

Now we should preface this analysis by defining our use of the word exclusive. We use in the context of the battle between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Some of the titles may appear on PC or mobile, and a small number even on Wii U, but this is an article centred on the two lounge room heavyweights who currently vie for dominance.
So, as of September 25, 551 unique experiences are available for sale right now across the respective stores. Of these, 200 games appear on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One stores and are therefore not exclusive to one or the other. Of the remaining 350 titles, 229 are on the PlayStation 4 store only, and 122 are unique to the Xbox One store.
It’s not quite double, but it’s not far off, with the PlayStation 4 clearly offering more content. A large part of this disparity comes from the indie gaming scene, which have taken a stronger liking to Sony’s landscape than that of the Xbox One. However, many Eastern publishers from Sony’s homeland also favour the PlayStation 4 and a number of these head west through the likes of Koei and Namco Bandai, further pushing the divide.
It’s also worth noting that there is a small margin of error to consider – for example, Skylanders: Trap Team and Skylanders: Swap Force were originally released on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, however, they have since been pulled from sale on the PlayStation Store, while remaining on the Xbox One store. So while not technically an exclusive, for the purposes of a newcomer looking to choose a console, they may as well be.
