As the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch is not short on activities and attractions for locals and visitors.

With restrictions at a minimum, you’ll find most things are back up and running. Though there are a few rules and regulations you’ll still have to follow when out and about.

Note, the below is accurate as of 2 March 2021. Due to the evolving nature of the situation, the information provided can change at any time. Contact the venue before visiting to confirm. Social distancing and maintaining good hygiene still apply.

What restrictions are in place for Christchurch residents?

All of New Zealand, aside from Auckland, is on Alert Level 2. This means there are some restrictions in place to keep you and the rest of the community safe from COVID-19.

  • Physical distancing. When in public spaces such as shopping centres you should keep two metres away from those outside of your household. When in a controlled environment, such as offices and restaurants, you should keep one metre away from others.
  • Wear a mask on transport. This includes on public transport and domestic flights. Whenever you’re out in public, it’s encouraged that you wear a mask, particularly where social distancing is difficult to maintain.
  • If you’re sick, get tested and stay at home. Even if you’re presenting the mildest of symptoms, get tested for COVID-19 to reduce any potential spread of the virus. Go straight home after your test and stay put until you receive a negative result.
  • Download the NZ COVID Tracer app. All businesses, services, transport operators and workplaces must include NZ COVID Tracer app signage. Patrons should use these to check in and out to track where they’ve been.
  • Practice good hygiene. This includes washing your hands for 20 seconds often and covering your face when sneezing or coughing.
  • You may travel locally and regionally where the alert level is the same or lower. Local travel is permitted, though it’s advised that you avoid regions with a higher alert level. At the moment this is Auckland which is at Alert Level 3.
  • Gatherings are limited to 100 people. This applies to all social gatherings, including weddings and funerals.
